Just using alcohol on a cloth worked well right away on the grip of a Shark handheld vacuum. Plasticizers (usually phthalates) are added to PVC to make it flexible / rubber-like, so the stickiness is the plasticizer migrating out over time, and alcohol is a safe and effective solvent to remove it from the surface. When I bought the hydro star new from HB it was one of the worst purchases I’ve ever made. It didn’t work the way it was supposed to out of the box. I’m lucky I got a refund. Somethings at HB aren’t bad and do pretty good but then again you get what you pay for.

I found this helpful but I didn't have cornstarch on hand so used flour instead. My thinking was that it wasn't really a chemical reaction happening so much as a result of the fine powder adhering to the sticky bits and thus preventing them from sticking to your hand. Washing with water seemed to have a negative effect so I just slapped it with a hand towel to dust it off and that seemed to do the trick.
