I first was introduced to the sound of this organ in La Madeleine by a fine recording of Saint-Saens complete Preludes and Fugues, I think by Odile Pierre. That won me over to both the compositions and the glorious sound this particular instrument makes.

Loved this! A bit surprised why Bach didn't Picardy third this. Maybe I'll ask him one day.
@markbell99733 жыл бұрын
No Picardie third? The French have the answer: "C'est la vie." ...those times when we have no other choice. Where it would be intellectually dishonest to superimpose a happy ending..in this life anyway. ===== You convinced me RE: the +/- "petit plein jeu, with 16' Posaune for the bass line. With Walcha as our model, all these years I know of no other performance of the Fantasia othe than with a brooding 8' principal or an mp Fonds 8'. You, tho: That perfectly balanced but none the less 'proud'--and so 💯effective open reed that can multitask every context for which it is deployed. The mixtures, above: Alsatian genius in their ability to pierce the delicate organs of the ear and our very skin...only to then proceed straightaway to the mind and the emotions working together in one unified operation. It's that silvery luminosity, transparency, urgency that makes this work of Bach's breathe out a "loss/geief worked through and overcome" as far as our vulnerable, earth-bound humanity might permit. And so we have in this late-youth (or early maturity?) work a headlong drive towards the finish line. To triumph over adversities; for sure! I'm reminded of lines by Goethe (if memory serves). "Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh' " You nailed it man. Muchas gracias!

Try Helmut Walcha on Archiv-Produktion - he sure knew what he was doing!!! As to your attacking me as a non-organist because I disagree with you: SHAME ON YOU!!!!!
@Leisesturm11 жыл бұрын
Really? Care to link any performances that do that? Clearly you don't play organ. For such a short work the kind of treatment you espouse is just not done. A fine plenum is its own reward. I MUST voice my strongest objections to this kind of uninformed propaganda.

@FromHolbergsTime I agree with your comment. My introduction to Demessieux's playing was with a 1950's LP of her at Victoria Hall, Geneva. Then later, her landmark 1959 recordings of Franck at the Madeleine became my introduction to the sheer magnificence of Cavaille-Coll's organ building skills. But I recall my disbelief upon first seeing a picture of the Madeleine organ; so plain-looking! Appearances can certainly be deceptive. All fine organs mutually excel each other in one way or another.

Some of the best articulation of individual parts I've ever heard in any performance of this work - bravo. But Silverdaddy's point is taken - it is a bit rushed.
@LJBSasha14 жыл бұрын
Too monochrome - this piece can use more registrational variety. To play it all throughout "organo pleno" may be OK when it's merely background music; but given that it's meant to be more, I MUST voice my strongest objections to this kind of "historically-informed *propaganda*". Pity as the organ sounds very nice and some nice inflections relative to articulation... 2/5
