The girl should be watching her legs, next time it may cut deeper than just the trousers.

The majority of people get into it in 2 ways. 1. They go to college which has a collegiate team for the sport, as is the case for me, and my girlfriend Brighid in the video. Sometimes people go to college knowing that it exists and it’s cool, other times they just happen to hear about the team at some random point in time and join up. 2. They have family that did it/know someone who did and get into it at a younger age doing FFA competitions, things like 4H club, Boy Scouts, etc sometime funnel into it as well. As to why, overall it’s just a fun and unique competitive sport. College teams and competitions run like a track meet, so you have a good small closely knit team atmosphere. Pro side is more individual but just as entertaining. It’s a small sport for sure, but it’s a unique and enjoyable one for those that participate. No different from any other sport or hobby in that regard. Some people bowl, some do archery, some golf, some play chess, some do an adult sports leagues for basketball or hockey or whatever, and some choose to chop and saw wood.

I don’t know if everyone involved “gets into it”. Some people just show up and do it. We have a small college in our area that does forestry degrees in conjunction with the University of Florida. They have a “lumberjack festival” every year with events like this where the public can come and learn about forestry, agriculture, and our nearby state forest. People do events like this. My dad and I managed to get into an event similar to this video and competed against five other teams. We got second place and had almost no prior practice with it.

Before modern saws and machines, this was how they cut wood! Even back then there were contest and women actually did physical work at times!

It's basically just like football or car racing. They wanna see who is the best at it.

@@roseanneroseannadanna9651 Exactly! The whole sport is based on old lumberjack/logging things that happened. All the chopping events is how they chopped up and broke apart trees for harvesting. Same with all the sawing events. Bow saw was made specifically for pulp wood, hence its 4 foot length. The crosscut like shown here was used for tree cutting. Axes for felling trees and breaking them up. Axe throw was just people voted in a logging camp and started hucking their axes for fun. People started doing it to see who was best, fast forward a good amount of time and boom it’s a sport.

With a scarf that size you could do with more slope on the bottom.

I'm just an old Florida boy, but have used such saws for tree limbs, and can testify that the speed this man has cutting through this wood is simply INCREDIBLE !! IF IT DOESN'T APPEAR FAST TO THE VIEWER, I RECOMMEND YOU TRY DUPLICATING WHAT HE IS DOING HERE,... BECAUSE YOU CAN'T . lol

We wear chainmail on our feet when we chop. The same type of stuff medieval knights wore. That way instead of cutting off half your foot it just breaks a bone if you hit it at full speed. But that's extremely rare due to the way you stand/experience. Cool stuff!
