i LOVED this video!! and i'm going to dump out my thoughts/feelings lol apologies for the ridiculously long comment this is the first video i've seen of yours and i really love how it's not just about the album, exploring the era is so valuable! this was my absolute favourite patd era, i got into them during afycso and i loved that era too, but 2007-2009 is when i was deeply obsessed and pretty. odd was probably the height. it's still one of my favourite albums ever, possibly my favourite 2000s album (which is saying something given that's when most of my favourite albums were released), and the appreciation it gets now is so validating bc it was criminally underappreciated back then. which is also why exploring this era matters to me! behind the sea and northern downpour in particular are still some of my very favourite songs. behind the sea is just transcendent to me and i loved what you said about it - especially about ryan's vocals! that made me so happy! i always ADORED ryan's voice, which was such an unpopular opinion at the time (in my experience, maybe i was extra sensitive to it lol) and getting to hear him on an actual album was exactly what i wanted. i really feel like pretty. odd showed ryan and brendon at their best, it was a perfect mix of what they brought to the band. and i just wanna touch on the fan reception bc oof. haha. the album definitely grew on people but my god so many fans hated it. it felt like literally everyone wanted afycso 2. i still remember when they first played true love and we were like wtf is this lmao, it was so unlike them, it seemed so uncomplicated and basic. and then omg when they randomly dropped we're so starving on january 1st. people were horrified lmao, after a few listens i got into it ironically and then i understood what they were doing, but given how little we knew about the album it really didn't seem like a good sign, it was such a step down from fever. everything so far felt, lyrically and conceptually, like a step down. we were so ready to be disappointed. and then nine in the afternoon!! and the album!! i was immediately in love with both, and i felt like an outlier - even if people liked it, it was always 'but afycso is better'. on the one hand i totally get it, i usually hate change, but on the other i can't imagine being pigeonholed into something you did as a teenager and being met with resistance from your core support when you experiment or change. (i do totally agree that they probably should've released at least some of the cabin demos as an ep; i feel like their/ryan's perfectionism - or maybe label interference?? - got in the way which i very much understand but am sad about.) and this was never going to be a band who stayed the same. (they also never did really fit with pop punk at all haha i'm glad you mentioned that!) (and ahhh the nearly witches demo! omfg i was obsessed with that when it was on the fob mixtape in late 2008! i was pleased with the eventual evolution onto vices & virtues but obviously it wasn't the same, that early demo was sooo good and i've always wanted to hear the rest of it. gah. i wish they'd done that one live instead of true love lol 😭) (also. the cottage core lesbians comment made me think. tbh... i feel like there's a vaguely queer reading to be made in a lot of pretty. odd. songs if one tried/wanted to see it. for me, at 18, just uncovering my own queerness, playing in the shallow end, i can see a lot of stuff in it that resonated with me then for that reason. which is very interesting to me but has always felt somewhat taboo to mention. so i'm burying it here in this long comment no one will bother to read lmao) also with touring - they toured australia in august 2008, they headlined with the academy is and cobra starship, two of my other fave bands - that was the first time i went to multiple dates of a tour and it was probably the best week of my life atp hahaha. seeing behind the sea live was my favourite live experience for the longest time :') anyway. that spin quote is so apt :') just, overall i feel like ryan deserves so much more credit than he got for what he did with those first two patd albums. like yeah his influences were always extremely obvious but he was very innovative and clever, especially given his age. i know he DOES get credit lmao but his creative vision was so immense and he was thrown into something incredibly intense (they all were) and i wish he was recognised on the same level as all of that. which is why this video made me so happy!!

Blood rush,' had 2 overarching themes 1) ' slut-shaming,' and 2) they REALLY wanted people to know that they were sexually active...It's definitely a questionable (at minimum) choice, considering the fact that I'm pretty sure they were young when this album was released, and their target audience was very young as well. Like, just because teenagers in general are hella immature and 'have raging hormones' (and sexual activity sometimes goes along with those 2 things)... There are so many things that SHOULDN'T have been OK-ed. ESP. if they were teenagers, and/or if they were trying to appeal to teenagers. I don't know if part of the dynamic was that Shaant (the vocalist) thought he was attractive/appealing, and/or that the label thought he was, but like.... If he wasn't a teen, I really hope that he wasn't trying to appeal to teens? I remember my friend, Emily, had 'Blood Rush' on CD (I don't care enough to type the whole album title), and we used to listen to it back in MIDDLE SCHOOL. Yes, I was a fan of them in middle school (and high school). I remember back in '05-'07, 'everyone' in music was calling 'everyone' a whore. There was Misery Business (Paramore), I write sins not tragedies (Panic! at the Disco), and 'slut shaming' was a recurring theme on the album 'Blood Rush,' -- though, to be specific, he refers to whoever as a 'whore,' specifically in the song 'Newport Living.' Yet, for the most part, Hayley has been the main one that people have shamed. It's beyond. The one that always got me was 'The Fourth Drink Instinct,' because Shaant 'slut shamed' a MINOR (he mentioned in the lyrics that she's underaged and has a fake ID) for...someone else r*ping her, when she was too drunk to consent. 🤮 🤬 WHO approved these lyrics?! And no, I don't give 2 sh*ts that it was 'a different time.' Furthermore, as a r*pe survivor, f*ck him and anyone else who thinks like that. 🤷‍♀️

I was surprised not to hear you make several comparisons to Ronnie radke over the course of this series. I couldn’t get him out of my head when seeing trace, in both appearance and his later personality. Massive egos, while Ronnie was massively talented and Trace was massively untalented. Two ends of the same spectrum.

Bamboozle 2006 or 2007? Brand new was slotted, at the top of the line up. TBS was announced at the last minute as a special guest. When we got there, at opening, brand new had already taken stage and from what I was told played a terrible set and then got out of there. I always assumed it was cause of tbs.

The songs from RPM were originally from KZbin but were later unlisted and I have listened to 5 of the songs of it and it's got more of an Alternative Rock sound with some Rap Rock and Post-Grunge elements rather than Folk, World, and Country. Also the genres on Wikipedia have been changed to just Nu Metal, because I guess the source I used wasn't reliable enough.

Self-Titled album was solid man ngl. Obviously not anywhere near as heavy as the previos albums, but it was so good for what it was and I think they accomplished what they had wanted to do with it.

Watchtower Database is a well above average DC focused channel FYI it’s clear that Blender Magazine was an incredibly useless piece gossip publication. If anyone for a second thinks that “Long Island” is at all considered Upstate New York then you need your head checked. Edit: and I love how they admit they dug rap at that time, I hope that those in the crowd who reacted so shocked have heard the interview you shared towards the end that was semi recent

i was a literal infant when this stuff started and i think the fact that i saw fall out boy last year really says a lot about them as a band. you've got something good going if you're still actively doing cool stuff twenty years later. also on an only slightly related note, it's fascinating for me whenever i see the almost brought up because southern weather was just a random cd that we had and that i always listened to growing up. at some point my teen mom was buying a lot of cds and that was one of them amoung others such as a couple by run kid run and later dark is the way light is the place by anberlin. it seems insane now but being a kid with no Internet access all i knew about a band was one single album and that they were christian or else we probably wouldn't have the cd. it's uncanny now that basically any music i could possibly want to listen to is at my fingertips when not that long ago the only music i had available was whatever christian cds interested my mom in her cd buying hayday.

I saw them at Sad Summer in Atlanta and they were ok! They filmed a video for their new song Alien that I’m waiting to be released. It was kinda weird. They threw blow up aliens in the crowd and Travis told us not to let them fall and to keep them crowd surfing. It was also weird because you could hear the back track of vocals through the whole song. His voice wasn’t the best that day so maybe that was why, but it was also only during that song. So maybe it was because of the video they were filming. I’m definitely in the same boat with their other releases. I heard they had albums come out after the self titled but I never listened to them. I was kinda over them after their first album came out. Honestly, their lyrics are just a bit too cringe for my 32 year old self haha

I always loved the rainy day sessions EP they did with Larkin Poe in 2010 which I guess was like part of their descent into country after on your side came out. The songs they picked really leant themselves well to that like slow, harmony-focused kind of style though and Larkin Poe have always been brilliant, I wonder if maybe that partly inspired the vision of the next album but who knows! I'd be interested to know how that record came about anyway
