Sounds like my grandma on my mother’s side. I’d visit her every Sunday with my roommate/best friend. One day she was telling me about her “near death experience” she had the day before. “I was having trouble breathing and my chest hurt and I thought I must be having a heart attack!” Her face lit up when she said this. She was smiling ear to ear. So excited! “And then I realized… Nope. Just heartburn… Damn…” Her expression dropped so suddenly to serious and pouty that my roommate and I lost it. I always loved her sense of humor. She’s probably the reason why that whole side of the family has such a sarcastic and dark wit.

It sounds like his mom had only one or two fears, as most of the items on his list boiled down to "loud noises". There's an actual named condition for that. I forget what it's called though. Also, it's not at all irrational to be afraid of large nearby animals, regardless of their current noise-making status.
