In addition we should be extending the boundaries of Grays Reef, a natural reef sanctuary. An easier and better option than just sinking old ships.

The cars filmed underwater look to be the stainless steel cars. Unfortunately, they went to pieces unexpectedly fast, and there is almost certainly nothing left of them now.

Great video. The habitat was nearly devoid of larger predators. Some say spear fishing is good. I say spearfishing devastates snapper and grouper fish populations. Your video proves my point. Sad.
@jeffs7255
@jeffs7255 Жыл бұрын
I think youre just messing with people now. There are literally hundreds of snapper in this video. PLUS, snapper have been closed to fishing for years. Divers can't possibly be responsible any reduction in numbers, which are on the rise according to the latest stock assessment. Please contact me, a local diver or GADNR to better understand our local ecosystems AND dive effort vs fishing effort. I think your eyes will open to the reality of our artificial reefs and live bottom habitat.
@seekinfindin5669

The reefs are devoid of larger predatory fish because the divers have hunted them out. Other than the Goliath Grouper, the reefs were in terrible shape. No snapper, no grouper. Sad actually.
@jeffs7255
@jeffs7255 Жыл бұрын
You are making some interesting statements on these videos. The fact that you've implied that divers are responsible for "no snapper" shows how little you know about this ecosystem. Snapper have been closed to fishing(including spearfishing) for years (except 3 days per year). PLUS, if you've ever fished or dove out here, you would know there are MANY. Please please please speak to a local diver or shop. Speak to GADNR. These statements you are making are read by the community and need to be informed. Feel free to message me if you have questions about our local ecosystems. I'd be happy to give some local info as well as tell you where and how to find these large predators, which are found around the 200 square miles of live bottom habitat in 60-200ft.
@seekinfindin5669

I saw no beeliners, very few trigger fish but tons of baitfish. Things are looking up? I bet people dive that habitat and spearfish the groupers out. That? Is sad.
@jeffs7255
@jeffs7255 Жыл бұрын
Do you spend much time in the water around here? Grouper and big triggers don't spend any time in 40ft of water in our area. Beeliners are found in 80ft+ in our area. Very few people dive around here. 5% of the people compared to key largo. Saying divers are taking all the fish is a bold and under informed statement. Feel free to message me if you'd like to go over our ecosystems in the south Atlantic bight.

I'm proud of all the volunteers and DNR taking the time to do this. People don't realize that 1 adult oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water a day. They will clean a muddy river and increase the clarity of the water, to where the bottom can be seen. These reefs also increase habitat for many fish. And as you said, before long the oyster population will rise to the point where they can be harvested to eat for all you oyster lovers.

Altamaha Riverkeeper January 9 at 11:10 AM · "Our biggest concern is not knowing what the plan is for decreasing the environmental impacts from potential contaminants off the ship when they start taking it apart,” Inman said. The two cranes previously seen around the ship were no longer there Wednesday. The bottom of the ship, viewed from Jekyll Island, shows a thin black line, indicating oil. At this time, it’s unknown how much oil the Golden Ray released, but according to Altamaha Riverkeepers, that is more visible because the Golden Ray is starting to tip. "It is confirmed that 30 miles of our coast have been impacted by oil contaminant from the ship," Inman said." So GA DNR what is your spin going to be now?

@@Aeroswine1776 To be fair to Brian when I also heard about this I got excited. I love studying large ship disasters. HMS Titanic, M/V Souel, Northern Belle, Costa Concordia, M/S Estonia, MV Sewol etc etc. We're not glad it happens and we are sad for anyone who loses their life. However this does mean new content, a new project to study and see what, why and when. I can let you know that pretty much all of these kinds of disasters are down to human error, so it will be good to hear what the captain has to say.

@@brianmaloney9784 None of us are here because of disinterest. We must keep the respect and when I posted my comment they were not safe. I'm quite interested in the two world wars. They are high water marks for our ability to cause death and they are the antecedents for the Nuremberg trials. Which is the most powerful ruling in history. The idea that every person has that immutable spark of divinity and we must act accordingly. Presidents and peasants alike. Be well and go with God.

I think the in-tact car is an R32. They were built in 1964 and most were retired in 2008/2009 after which they were reefed. Looks like most of the cars are not in-tact anymore and that is why the program was discontinued. The cars deteriorated too fast underwater.
