Hope I don't insult anyone who got the punchline right away, but for younger people: Back then Catholics couldn't eat meat on Friday, so they couldn't take bites out of thumbs and ears! Yes, call me Miss Obvious, but if it enlightens even one person not familiar with this restriction, which was in place until the mid-1960's, it's worth it!
