Pastor, perhaps you can help me understand something. On what biblical basis are we to view the events written in the Olivet Discourse and Revelation as things that will happen in our lifetime? - In Matt. 24:34 Jesus states, "Truly I say to you, THIS GENERATION will not pass away until ALL THESE THINGS take place". How can a generation last over 2000 years? Also, the same Greek words used for "this generation" (Strong's G3778 'hoytos' & Strong's G1074 'genea') are the exact same words Jesus used in Matt. 23:36, "Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation". Remember that Jesus had just given the 8 woes upon the Pharisees and stated "so that upon YOU may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth,". - Revelation is a book written to the seven physical churches in Asia that were enduring persecution from both the Jews and the Roman army. In Revelation 1:1 we see, "....the things which must SOON TAKE PLACE" and in Revelation 1:3, "...for the time is NEAR". How would a book that is supposed to give comfort to those churches help them if "soon" and "near" meant 2000 years in the future? I don't see how Jesus can be God and a prophet if he was either 1) deceiving people with His words, or 2) got the time indicators found in both books completely wrong. I believe Christ is God and a true prophet...therefore according to His own words I see these as events that truly happened "soon, near and within THAT generation". Thank you.
