Hi Tom! I have been a ham for over 60 years, but have not been active for about 40. I also just made a couple of videos about sort of starting from scratch. The digital modes still sort of scare me, but now I can get on 2m and talk with the local hams. On HF, I only hear people one or 2 thousand miles away. I really don't have a shack, but I have the water heater room and my corner in the living room. Welcome to ham radio! Sue, LA0CY
@LB6QJ2 ай бұрын
well if you have somthing to place the radio on, you have a shack. a very god start for me on the digital wold was DMR. but it was a high but fun learning curve. don't be afraid of digital modes, if you are not quite sure what to do, you can always ask, and it's probably also a very good idea to contact a local club that can help you understand it. 73 and god luck on the digital platform. it's well worth it.

Off-topic, but how did you celebrate Syttende mai? Did you eat hot dogs and ice cream?
@LB6QJ3 ай бұрын
I would say that it will be up to each individual to find their own way, but we all agree that it is our freedom that we celebrate and that we must not take it for granted. But as is often the case, people gather together nicely dressed in suits and bow ties and some bring flags. If you have a family with children and they only go to school, it is very common for the family to first join in the celebration at school, where everyone goes on a train and sings our national anthem. It is also common for a good number of residents to join the national procession to take part in the celebration with music and song and waving the flag. After that, it is common for families to gather with neighbors or with the rest of the family to eat good food. There is a main rule on our liberation day and that is that children are allowed to eat as much ice cream as they want, some get sick from the amount haha. For grownups without children, it is common to make a celebration with food and friends and maybe alcohol later in the evening. For a number of young people in particular who are aged 16 to 25, it means drinking to bits and pieces until they drop. The age limit for alcohol is 18, although they are often broken without us adults seeing it. But for me personally I had to fix the car so I could go on a celebration but anyway, I went home to my dad and my grandmother and we had a nice meal and celebrated the easy way

There's so much stuff to think about with DMR setup 😑
@LB6QJ7 ай бұрын
It kinda is, but when you r in to it does also make sense. DMR kan be easy and dificult at the same time. i have a very complex codeplug from Steinarweb and i looks like a mess. What i like about it in that you can switch from one system to another with very easy step when you are done seting it up. I can now swith between hotspot with one button. Its really that easy whn your are done configure it.
@JohnTarbox7 ай бұрын
Hotspots are cool, particularly for hams that do not live near a repeater.

Yeah it is. This is the third i am setting up. I live on Senja so hotspot is my only option.

New hams generally need someone to Elmer them. Working one-on-one with a new ham to actually put up an antenna and test it, for example. All the gear in the world is only useful once someone takes the time to help you hook it up, test it, and show you how to operate it. This is why finding a good ham club where you can get to know other hams is essential. Meeting other hams in Oslo or another big city will be easier than living in a small town in a remote part of Norway. Living where you are the only ham within 100 kilometers must be tough.
@LB6QJ7 ай бұрын
True on the elmer part, i love that, i had that on the time when i went to radio school. local and local, we have a "Local" club (LA6M), but i have to travel 45 miles to get there, its not end of the world.

If you wish to be prepared for a severe and long-term, emergency such as occurred when the Germans invaded Norvik, then you will need more than simply more radios in your car. The Sami in northern Norway have serious knowledge and skills to thrive in harsh conditions with limited modern conveniences. One might do well spending some time with them learning how to live and travel outdoors. At least some hams might take on a challenge like putting together a backpack, skiing twenty miles, setting up camp, operating for 24 hours, and then skiing back home. Bonus points for doing this in January rather than July. This should be doable, especially compared to the exploits of Norwegians like Joachim Ronneberg and Roald Amundsen.
@LB6QJ9 ай бұрын
you are correct on those area, but it seems to be that you have a bit more knowledge about Norway than I thought, how do you know about the Sami people, joachim rønneberg and mr amundsen. Having basic skills of survival is something that is more and more forgotten nowadays, you are correct we should learn from our past for sure.
