Since breeder bins are kept pretty moist you might be better off with light migration or baiting the adults. Sifting on any level is very difficult with the amount of moisture desired in breeding bins.

70 to 80 degrees F is ideal for breeding. Not sure how a thermostat that shuts off at 50 degrees F helps?
@VermiChump15 күн бұрын
Because there is no way it's getting to 70 or 80 F in the whole bin during winter in the UK. However around the heating cable it is well in that range while it's on. And if that is perfect for the worms. If I set the thermostat to 70 or 80, then the heating cable would never turn off. And would likely overheat the worms and also dry out the bin

I did not start really using "worm chow" until last winter. Picked up a bag of organic chicken crumble and have been using it in my CFT bin, the worms are gigantic. I now pulverize eggshells, shellfish shells, seed heads from the garden, large seeds like luffa, birdhouse gourds and pumpkin, basically anything I can easily dry out and pulverize. The key to me is to add as much diversity in nutrition and biology as possible to my vermicompost. Stay Well !!!

Hi you said you keeping a temperature of around 20c for your breeding worms 🪱 are you increasing the temperature to 27c to hatch out the eggs?
@VermiChump27 күн бұрын
I don't increase the temperature. They will hatch at temperatures of 18'C to 25'C. So Warner would be better but not entirely necessary.

How do you look after them over winter
@VermiChumpАй бұрын
You don't need to do anything special. They will survive fine, but go dormant. Or you could do what I show in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3nGY5iKd76ZoZY
@chrissiehart22Ай бұрын
@VermiChump so I did watch it but you have large containers and they are inside. I'm glad I didn't rush into setting one up this year as now have lots of questions and will be following you to learn more. I worry that they would have less protection in a box the size of a shoe box and would die rather than go dormant in the outside elements and and can't go down to keep warm.
@WD-4146929 күн бұрын
@@chrissiehart22all of those assumptions are correct. Indoors is the way to go, if you can. My apartment is tiny, but a simple rubbermade tote is both deep enough and large enough to support a decent population.

I'd cover both bins with newspapers and an old towel it should help to keep the bins moist and warm. I personally use plastic on top of the newspapers. It holds all the moisture, but my bins are in the basement. I also just put the cocoons in the outdoor compost when I find them, as they only hatch when conditions are right. With the cold Cdn 🥶 winters, it still works If it didn't cost so much to ship, I'd send you some bins. Sorry, Shaun. Oh, btw I love this format of videos . Keep on keeping on.
@VermiChump2 ай бұрын
An old towel is a good call! I am waiting on a bunch of newspapers from a couple people in our village, I unfortunately don't have any. I think in your climate, the heating cables would have a real job on their hands in a non-insulated shed like mine. We don't typically get much below around -2'C. Will be keeping an eye on things. Shipping would be a killer to the UK for something as bulky as those bins. Do you use them? They look perfectly suited for this.
@tammybrazeau1213Ай бұрын
I have one but not in use right now. I have put all my worms into my plastic barrel, and I cut in half lengthwise and connected the haves together. Now I have over 20 pounds in the barrel, and they all shrank in size.
