Hello curious as to how your resto journey is going. About to start a 78 super beatle convertible resto project.

How do you find out what type it is? I have a 1974 beetle from what I was told it's not a super beetle but a standard beetle. So I keep having issues when I try to look up parts or videos seem super beetles keep popping up.

Front coil springs are Super Beetle only.

Be careful, that safety catch can still let the spring plate go. I have a broken index finger to prove it. First broken bone in 62 years! ('74 Karmann Ghia)

Very cool man ! I'm going to be starting my 73 super very soon. Your video here gave me a really good idea of what I'm going to need to replace and repair , looking at the running boards when they are rusted out still on the chassis it's hard to even tell what is what. Thanks !

Great video. I had to do some chopping on my 67 beetle to redo the front end. Going to have to put new shocks, new sway arm bushings and brackets, new ball joints, etc…

I think you just answered a question I've yet to ask. Re: under-dash steering column bolts. I'm building a car out of clips and doors. I took a steering column out of a 72 and went to put it in....they were waaay different. The bolt pattern in my cowl section looks like yours....so I guess it's a 74. Who knew?

Lol I was so confused. I thought you had lifted the front and were trying to raise the rear.. 😂

How did you life the body off the pan? Also what if someone has an engine in the car?
@skipdog213 жыл бұрын
Once everything is disconnected I just lifted the front and slid a board under it that rested on sawhorses set at drivers and passengers side. Then did the same with the rear. Easy with one person as the body is so light. If the engine was in you need to speed extra time making sure there are no catch points. The engine is so easy to remove I would recommending that you drop it first.

My car has always kinda leaned to the pass. Side but I lowered the front of my 72 SB and now its really high in the rear driver side and its almost touching on the front pass. tire. Have you ever heard of rear torsion wearing and making the front sit clock eyed?
@skipdog213 жыл бұрын
Could be the torsion bar causing it by having too much on one side verse the other. Could also be a damaged torsion bar causing a sag on the passenger side. I would also check the front torsion bar on the front of the car.it is held by a bolt in the center of the housing and the passenger side could be broken or missing a bar more than the drivers side.

Pls advise- If I have to change the torsion bar bushings of my 71SB do i disengage at the CV joint end or the swing arm at the allen bolt end to swing the drum to relieve the spring tension ? Which is a lesser hassle ? Also is there a way to remove the spring cover ( 4 bolts) without bring out the torsion bar from its housing so as not to disturb the stock height as I fear I may alter the splines settings while putting it back although I would do the needed markings ?
@skipdog214 жыл бұрын
A lot of questions! Mark across the spring arm plate joint with a paint pen, remove the top end shock absorber bolt, remove the spring arm.plat bolts, and then the drum should swing out of the way. Mark the location of the spring arm to the torsion bar housing with a paint pen and it is helpful to also use a angle finder to add addition reinstall informstion. Now remove the 4 bolts of the torsion housing. If you are replacing the rubber/poly bushing you can do so. Place the plate back on and make sure that it matches the line you drew and the angle is the same. This will ensure you keep your original height. As always, there is a lot of force in the torsion bar. Enough to snap a leg or arm. Be careful!!!

@@skipdog21 Thank you so much. Please let me know where u sourced your bushings so has to have the original rubber notch on the inner surface of the outer rubber bushing as seen in yur video. The once I saw all had plain smooth inner surfaces without the notch,

Great video lowering my 73 super beetle my question is once I popped out my spring plate I marked it with a sharpie on frame part then I pulled the plate off when doing so the torsion bar part that goes inside the frame or middle part of car pulled out loosing the placement. My goal was to replace bushing and lower the rear 4 inches if u can help i would appreciate it thanks
@skipdog214 жыл бұрын
I would recommend putting the plate back on without the bushing TEMPORARILY until you find what the correct alignment is. The inner and out splines are not the same so it will be a little trial and error for you. Once you find it matching with your sharpie mark then you have your starting point. A 4 inch drop is going to shoe your tires pretty badly so you may need a transmission/engine raise to comp. Hope this helps

Anyone have tips for repairing the backrest on my passenger seat? The lever moves up and down but the seat won't push forward. I seperated the seat tonight and notice the cable on the left side is not moving the mechanical lever as much as the right. Do I need to remove the seat cover and adjust the cable? Just bought my wife a 75 beetle and in the process of figuring out what and where to start. Never messed with a bug, so any help is appreciated!! Great video to show all the component break down on this car. I think I'm going to have a million questions this spring.. 😆

@Da3m0n755 жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity.... what did you use to do the actual lifting of the body from the chassis?
@skipdog215 жыл бұрын
The body is very light once you have it disconnected. I have done it two ways. 1) lifting the body by hand then having someone slip the extended saw horses under the front then repeat for the rear. 2) a pump Jack with a 4x4 post to raise it. The second way of course you dont get a large amount of clearance but you only need just enough to clear the rear axle and suspension.

On those rear heat flaps that little black plastic clamp has 2 tiny flathead screws to hold the wire. Just listen one and you’ll be disconnected from the body.
@danielwirtz19615 жыл бұрын
So u have to repeat the whole process on the other side with turning the torsion bar?

do you have to remove the engine to get the body off?
@skipdog215 жыл бұрын
You could feasibly remove the body without taking the engine out. The engine tin would be a concern. Also, getting the body raised high enough to pass over the carbs could be an issue. You would still have to disconnect cables, electrical, and such that pass through or connect to the body.
@kuakini35 жыл бұрын
thanks for the answer. could you tell me I should get for gas mileage with a 1973 1600 bug engine in good shape?
@skipdog215 жыл бұрын
I would think around 25 to 32 mph depending on tune, carb, and engine shape

What is that black thing under the dash? It looks like a little light.
@skipdog215 жыл бұрын
Under the dash to the left of where the steering column goes and is white, red, and black? That is the fuse box. Or, if you are taking about the black hose that is for the windshield wiper fluid.
