The best song from the late 60s you never knew. It is a great track and there is something especially appealing in the combination of American performers, in an American idiom but with a production and sound that is somehow unmistakeably British. It is has a weird kind of cultural dislocation that is great somehow. No less, I suppose, the promotional film!
@Raider5776 күн бұрын
I don't know if it's unmistakeably British. When it was released in America they thought it was a Motown or a similar American production. The song scraped into the top 40 in the States but not here.

This popped in to my head today. Not heard it since................well, I don't recall the last time I heard it - probably 30+ years ago. The more I listened, the more that 30+ years disappeared and I was back to being 11 again in '81.

Such an enchanting film which I saw as a child and have never forgotten it. Just looked on Google Earth to try to locate the setting in Mandriole but the property has disappeared to be replaced by a new house and the property to the right of the petrol station in the film which looked so fresh and colourful is now abandoned and derelict. The magic of that moment in time in 1959 is now but a charming memory.

The original house is still there. If you go to maps.app.goo.gl/ovoYnRYfjAdCDWCg7 select street view and move a few houses to the left, it's the last driveway before the Eden Cafe. I do agree with you that the charm of the place has completely gone.

Amazing that two guys from Liverpool can write and produce something that sounds as good as any Motown record. I'm sure if the Supremes or Martha and the Vandellas had done this song it would have been way bigger. I can faintly remember one of the singers Pearly Gates appearing on the TV show Celebrity Squares in the Seventies hosted by Bob Monkhouse.

As near as I can tell from Google maps, the address is 26 Cambridge Rd W, Farnborough, UK. The set back tan colored house between the red brick house and the white one. Compare time index 05:34 (view across the street), with Google Street View across the street from this address. The houses across the street look essentially the same to me. Edit: The house (two houses down the street) at 05:50 is 30 Cambridge Rd W, Farnborough. From Google Street View you can see the distinctive roof and same color (of course) bricks. The hedge the little girl is hiding in, is still there. Although needs a trimming now, lol. Or at least when the Google car went by the last few times. That would be 28 Cambridge Rd W, Farnborough. Hope this helps.

I agree, you have found the exact location. I wonder if the people living in the house now built where the garage was know about this film? Maybe I should send them a copy...
@DUCKDUCKGOISMUCHBETTER3 ай бұрын
@@geoffpeters8843 To me it looks like the built-in garage of number 26 is actually the garage in the film. Or am I missing something?
@geoffpeters88433 ай бұрын
@@DUCKDUCKGOISMUCHBETTER Trying to peice together what has happened here is my take on it. The garage in the film was originally to land the right side of Blackwell Cottage, time index 03:15 shows where the old lady comes out of the house and goes across to the garage. This land was used as a building plot and a new yellow brick house built before 2009 (the first street view shows it there in July 2009). Blackwell cottage then had a new garage built to the rear of their property. Looking at Google street view (Sept 2022) I think where the garage in the film was is now part of the new front extension of the yellow brick house so unfortunately the original concrete stand-alone garage has long gone.
