Thing that I've noticed watching through hobo videos and documentaries is depending on how you appear and how you go about being a Hobo determines how rough you will have it. If you spend time keeping clean and not being all thug life, you will get away with far more, usually get warnings even if you been caught a few times before, etc. The "feds" they speak about are Federal Rail-Road Police or Amtrak Police, they operate in yards (especially in cities), that is why you get off before you get to those places and you'll have FAR fewer run ins that way. It's all about being in the know and being careful and when you are living the dirty don't give a crap lifestyle (gutter punk). It doesn't even take much effort to keep a basic level of clean. Most of these guys look like they haven't washed in weeks. I wash twice a week and make a conscious effort to wash face, pits and crotch at the end of each day using a wash cloth that I'll wash using castile soap afterwards. But then again, I also don't smoke, drink or use drugs. I never understood those folks who are homeless and never make an attempt to keep clean, you got a far better chance at landing odd jobs and temp work by staying clean, so it's all about choices and how you present yourself.

Had a Dirty Kid and his dog Rebel stay w me and my cat Spirit for 2 weeks here the Hub City Aberdeen SD a few months ago. Interesting to say the least. His story mirrored these guys story. lived like them in the uk with anarchist punks squatting, homeless. did it for like 8 years, begging, spotbegging, could make a lot of money to be honest busking. kinda of a slightly different style clothing but close during the summer maybe a bit cleaner there is more charity i guess in the uk. only thing is we didnt ride trains and if we did we just got on public transport and jumped the paying part. it was good fun lots of drugs,drink,free living, bad parts people dieing. suicide, overdoses,. but you meet some cool people and mental people. left it know got sick of alcohol and drugs..somtimes you will look at a homeless person and pity them sometimes they pity you. they are not the slaves.

My grandpa picked coal off the rails as a boy to keep warm and a few years back I met some highly educated young adults who really loved trains and knew trains like someone that work the rail for their life, I'd just like to say to the industry maybe find a way to embrace our future children to have a place in this legacy.
