The amount of cargo ships sunk before the US officially entered the war is staggering. Merchant marines and civilians paid a great price to supply the Allies. German u-boats went totally unchecked in the Atlantic during those times. Sailers took great risk to provide a lifeline to Europe and Russia before we officially declared war. It also made the US very wealthy and rightfully so because beside “battle of pacific” the conflict in Europe had little to do with US

I knew her when I was a lad. She and my single mother pretty much raised me and I remember when she got her degree in 1958 and drove off in a brand new "Nash Metropolitan". Great memories.

I was very lucky to have Captain Stephens as a professor at Maritime College before he retired, teaching us basic seamanship and how to drive and dock launch boats our mug (freshman) year. He can still drive them in his 90s like a pro. The man is a living legend and is well respected by everyone that's had his class. I hope he's doing well.

Thank you for FINALLY including our Merchant Marines ! Our own White House left out our Merchant Marines this year when they did the television show and all the branches of the service were represented. They could have given a mention at least to our WW2 Merchant Marine veterans between 1942 to 1946 ? If I have those dates wrong because it is only for a FEW years that the Merchant Marines are considered veterans although in of my heart they will ALWAYS be special! In memory of my father WM H. Carver - Engine rooms and ALL our Merchant Marine ❤️ Thank you for your sacrifices xoxo

Olderpete. To answer you. You know I industry don't take that good care even though we love to have did our jobs as we sit and think there are private companies that own the ships we have our Union then there's the maritime administration and Homeland security all of this is involved in that being a merchant Marine so when we have a tragedy like the alfaro these entities need to come together but they don't and we just left out in the cool when you retire a nice pension by the time to Union cuts it up it's not that great but we live with we don't have medical insurance it's too expensive and we don't have any veterans benefits we are not considered veterans but through it all we really enjoy sailing and the camaraderie of eachit would be very very nice if someone would have gone to Congress so that we could have had some kind of benefits when you retire we don't have anyone fighting for that 😂

America needs to know this. So many are clueless of what sacrifices were made for us.

My dad was in the Merchant Marines from 1939 at age 16 to about 1968. He was on two ships sunk by u-boats and saw many friends eaten by sharks. Rest in Peace dad.

Were any of the El Faro crew SIU members? If so, why was the SIU not a "Party In Interest", representing those members, at the El Faro Marine Board of Inquiry conducted by the USCG?
