You only had to roll 1 di for the Traitorous Guards I love the mental imagery of the assassins showing up, immediately taking a blow to head and keeling over in the subsequent round

I have a question: If an ability says "heal 3", is it JUST for yourself or can you give the healing to another player? The ability you showed at 1:05:02 shows "Target player heals 1"

Oh good. The Monk! I wasn't sure how to play this guy. Now I patiently wait for your play through on all the others. Like the farmer and the demon hunter. *nudge nudge, wink wink*

Ha, you actually picked two off my short list, so you may get to see those sooner than later! I kinda want to do a Hidorian run through just to give them another go but I have concerns that playing that char would add like 30 mins of me debating dice storing to the vid's runtime.
@respond_code32 жыл бұрын
@GetTheTables I'm not sure he would survive a solo play. I haven't tried him yet. But I feel like to much storing dice while taking damage. After 3 straight solo losses I wasn't about to try him for a 4th. I went with fizzleboom and finally made it through a solo play.
@GetTheTables2 жыл бұрын
So I threw Hidorian at the Corrupted Horse and they got through pretty cleanly. They are a really interesting character to play because you're always playing at least 1 turn ahead, if not more. And because you always know what dice you have to work with going into a turn you can set up some really effective rounds. However, just like real life, it is easy to spend more resources than you generate (and sometimes you have to when things get rough). So its mostly about managing your dice economy. Which is really engaging but maybe not the best when suffering from brain drain (or too many gaming beers).

@@GetTheTables i'm late to this, but you actually WON solo with Hidorian????

Nice review. I think it's great that the game can be enjoyable at a solo level and at a party level. It provides different approaches to how to handle obstacles.

Agreed. And to update something I said in the review vid: Catharsis' scaling works well in both directions. Because player turns are simultaneous its one of the few games I've played that doesn't bog down as the player count goes up, which is real nice.

My game arrived. Re watched your video. Quick question. You showed an example. Power allows you to change 3 dice by 1. So you have to change 3 dice. As you said. You can't change 2 and be like eh. I don't need to change the 3rd. But since you have to change 3 here's my question. Can you use this power on other players? If yes. Does it have to all apply to that 1 player? Another words. Have one player change the value of 2 dice, and have a different player change the value of 1 die. You now fulfilled the rules of the power by change 3 dice. Just spread across 2 players. Or heck. Can 3 players change just 1 die each? As I'm typing this now I wonder. The Samurai has heal 2. This can be used on any player I assume. But can it be spread out among other players? 2 players each heal 1. So technically you are healing 2 EDIT: just saw the part of your video heal works on anyone. But can you spread it out?
@GetTheTables2 жыл бұрын
Great questions! -So for Heals, all of that has to go to one person. Definition of "Heal" on pg. 9: "Heal #: -*-A-*- player immediately refreshes that many powers." (emphasis added)- EDIT: Just read the discord discussion and Art clarified that Heal can likewise be spread around too. Too many years of wargaming apparently have me reading rules too literally! Very good to know for multiplayer games. The dice changing question had be going back and forth. Rules as written, you can spread it out. Just to be sure I asked in the Catharsis discord and Art clarified that yes, you can indeed spread that effect out (so long as you had enough valid targets for it). Leme truly is a party support machine. :)

I can not believe I have watched over 3 hours of KZbin videos on this game lol. I think I'm just trying to talk myself into spending the $90. I saw they mentioned on FB if you reach out to them they will give you a code to knock off shipping if in the US.. I need to get around to messaging them anyway. Because I think I read somewhere when these big boxes are sold out they're going to smaller boxes and cards. And it won't be 12 characters anymore. I think they are removing some. I like the bigger cards honestly. So i need to find out if this is true. I'm also wondering how future expansions will work. Are they going to be smaller cards? My OCD is going to hate that. EDIT: Forgot the reason I was leaving a comment. I wanted to say this is by far the best video I have seen on this game so far. There's another one that does a full play through that's really good. But this one covered the rules.

Glad you found the video useful! To follow up about the box changes: I've spoken to the devs a bit about this and so far as I'm aware the only thing that is changing is the size of the core box whenever they do another print run. They're going to scale back some of the box contents so that the core box has an overall smaller form factor (not sure of the exact char/boss deck #s but it's not too many cut out from what I remember). Similarly CWG are planning some smaller scale expansions, which are going to be like 2 chars and 1/2 boss decks in a box. So far as I know, the size of the actual cards *is not* changing. That is a feature a lot of people like and I think it's a facet of the game CWG are happy with. The only thing that is shifting with new print runs/releases is how they are packaging things.

@GetTheTables I misunderstood. I placed my order. Hopefully by this Tuesday I'll have it. When I read smaller I must have thought the cards. But yes you are correct. I was in contact with them and the card size is not changing. They will be removing characters and adventures making the box smaller and cheaper.

This is a fantastic video. You covered everything! Thank you so much for making this. Just one thing I wanted to correct, is that you need to defeat all the monsters in a combat round to unexhaust the two cards. There are some cases in the game where you are fighting more than one monster at once. Ruby King Rizardo for example has a duplicate guard fight. The summoner deck is one constant battle.

Thanks for the kind words! Hopefully folks find it useful. Also thanks very much for the correction on when you get to trigger the post-combat recovery.

One of the designers here. mrmoondog, this review is absolutely awesome! You walk through all of the different aspects of game design, from the components, to the instructions, to the gameplay, and you provide not only your opinion, but also comparison points to other games and explanation for your thoughts. Thank you, sincerely, for such a thoughtful review! I'm so happy that your experience with Catharsis has been so positive. And wait until you see some of our ideas for expansions-we're already working on at least 8 more characters and some very different boss deck ideas so you can have keep enjoying the game for years to come!

Can't say it enough: thanks to you and everyone at CWG for persisting and getting Catharsis out into the world. You guys got hit with a really terrible time to produce and release a new game and I greatly respect the amount of drive and determination (morale?) it must have taken to push through all that. Very much looking forward to everything coming down the road for Catharsis and CWG!

Appreciate the kind words! I'd definitely love to do more stuff for Catharsis and hopefully will in the near future. I think the broader YT board game world does a great job of covering games in general - I owe basically any competency in this video to watching hours of channels like Shut Up & Sit Down, No Pun Included, and Watch It Played, and mimicing them shamelessly - so my initial drive is focused on Catharsis since it is so new and from a small/new dev. But if I can find the time and folks find it useful I wouldn't mind branching out a bit more eventually.
