Thank you so much for making this video, and including links to the parts at ace hardware. You are a lifesaver! I was just about to give up and call a plumber.

Thank you I have the exact plumbing! So very helpful in my repair. This is the only video I have found on American standard barrel DYII.

What did you replace the spout with? What was the brand of the original spout? I have a 1940s American Standard spout with a rear diverter that I cannot easily remove. It works fine when I periodically spray WD40 into the opening and onto the shaft of the diverter pull mechanism. The shower is not used often so maybe that is why this works. I'd still like to replace it someday but probably won't go to the length that you did. Enjoyed your comments.

Wow! Thank you very very much. The guy at the store could not tell me what to do. He had never seen that type before, and I certainly would not have figured it out. So. You Rock buddy. Saved me time and money, and frustation. Ps. Made it out of plastic also.

What tips do you have if my barrel doesn’t come out and is stuck
@chrisjohnson9903

When I took the barrel out for the first time, I had to pull on it a bit because the o-ring was deteriorated and stuck to the surface it presses against (the barrel had not been removed for many years probably). I didn't have to pull on it too hard though, so if it doesn't come out with a decent amount of force I'm not sure what the problem would be.

@@chrisjohnson9903 thanks for the response. I ended up purchasing a nipple extractor and that got it out.

Btw, I tried searching for the brass washer online and couldn't find anywhere that you could buy it. I don't think I was even able to find a part number for it when I looked about a year ago. The tupperware fix seems to work fine though as it has been a year since I did it and the problem has not returned.

Thank I’m having the same problem with the cold water handle on my sink. I’m going to try this fix today. My original had a thick washer between the barrel and valve stem. The re-nu replacement just had a thin brass washer

Thank you sir, really helpful video. Curious where did you find the valve gasket and the O ring to replace ?
@chrisjohnson9903

Info for the o-ring is in the 2nd imgur link in the video descrption. They had it in stock at my local Ace Hardware store. As for the gasket (#9, 35551), I found a few sites that sell it online but it didn't really seem worth it for various reason. So I carved it out of a rubber sheet instead using an X-Acto knife and a compass (1-1/4 OD x 1 ID x 1/8 thick). You can buy a 6 x 6 rubber sheet at any hardware store.

Thanks for the video. This is probably a stupid question...but: If the barrel isn't screwed in like a seat, what holds it in place and stops it from turning when you turn the knob/stem to turn the water on and off. It seems like it would just turn freely.
@chrisjohnson9903

When you screw the valve stem back in, it pushes the back chamfer face of the barrel (containing the o-ring) up against a mating surface and the friction between the two surfaces prevents the barrel from rotating. I made a related video BTW that talks about how the barrel and shower handle can sometimes keep spinning and what to do if that happens.

@@chrisjohnson9903 Haha, I was just working on a friend's and never saw a seat barrel like that, had always seen the small threaded in seats. I was also wondering what kept the barrel from spinning. Could not stop the leaking even with new washer, think a new seat is needed.
