Nero wasn't in Rome when it caught fire. He did not play the Lyre as stated. He was 100 miles away performing in an acting competition........he likely won.

I've always been fascinated by these "living" bridges. It's just not something we have any experience with anymore. While it makes sense that it had to be torn down, I wish I could have seen it in its heyday.

0:05 Southwark is pronounced like 'other' with an S and K added; 'Sutherk'. The W is completely silent. 0:33 Thames is pronounced 'Tems'. 1:30 It was the south, not north gate that displayed heads, and it was not known as Traitor's Gate, which is in the Tower of London.

Super interesting!! ☝️ I have always wondered what happened to this construction and bridge, as it’s so peculiar and special. The idea itself is not optimal, I’ve always felt, but I never thought that this was the reason for it to no exist today. It must have been fascinating to see! Fascinating architecture! Thanks for sharing!! 🙏

Nice, however, the presenter tends to "fade away" with her voice at the end of every sentence, which doesn't make for clear understanding. It is common practice for people who work with their voice, such as TV presenters, to pronounce very clearly the words all the way till the end, it would be nice to see that here too, so as not to have to replay everything or guess..

The image used when telling of the great fire of Rome, appears to me to look like one of the great fire of London, c. 1665, with the old St. Paul's looming in its midst. I would hope that a serious historian look elsewhere for information.

WHY THE FUCK IS THERE NO INFO ON HOW THEY BUILT A BRIDGE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WATER IN 1200's???? SERIOUSLY WHAT THE FUCK HOW??????? IVE BEEN LOOKING AND NOT ONE FUCKING VIDEO SAYS IT
@dariusanderton37602 жыл бұрын
somewhere I have seen a video about a medieval bridge and how it was constructed, but I am not sure if it was London Bridge or a similar bridge in Paris that also had buildings on it. I recall the outside walls of each pier were built first, and then it was filled in with gravel and stones.
@SameBasicRiff2 жыл бұрын
@@dariusanderton3760 So turns out searching "ancient bridge building" gets you alomst nowhere - but somehow MODERN bridge building videos show the history - so here it is; Half of the river is blocked with a retaining wall. That wall is then given another parallel wall, and an adjoining wall - so three walls blocking half the river. The water encompassed by these 3 walls (the open face butting up against the shore) gets pumped out by a water wheel. What is left is a small area of the river, wide enough for the bridge supports and long enough to extend just under half way across the river that is now dry river bed because of the retaining walls and the water pumped out. The dry half side of the river then gets it's concrete poured - which is mixed in a way to be able to set under water. The whole process is then repeated on the OTHER side of the river - so thats how the bridges are built. With retaining walls - water wheels - pumping out the water from half the river at a time, and letting the rest of the water flow around the retaining walls.

Nero was in Baiae when the fire hit. Historians believe that the fire started around the Circus Maximus, either in a set of food and clothes cleaning shops or in the Christian Quarter. It was certainly accidental. Cities had devastating fires going back 1000's of year, Rome, Troy, Athens, Sparta, Mycenae.
