Love this video! I adored Malcolm and Sam's relationship throughout the series. It's so obvious that they're more than boss and PA; one really gets the impression that they're good friends who are deeply fond of one another. I can't recall a time where he ever yelled at her (yelled for her, sure - by Series 4, him calling/bellowing her name was practically one of his catchphrases lol), though plz someone correct me if I'm forgetting something. I"m also down with the idea that one of the writers had about what happened to them after the series - that Malcolm did some corporate PR work, made enough to retire, and then settled somewhere and married Sam. Of course, I think their relationship would have had to evolve beyond what it's presented as in the series. There's a power imbalance there that makes things super sketchy regarding them getting together. My theory is that once Malcolm was forced out of the Party, Sam didn't stick around long. It was pretty obvious that her first loyalty was to him. She gets out and finds herself another job. Malcolm is a bit busy with his trial and whatnot, and perhaps pushes her away for a while b/c he doesn't want her to get caught up in everything. But Sam isn't having that and they end up spending time together as equals rather than as boss and PA. And things just kind of grow from there. (Oh, and she probably helps him write his memoirs where he skewers everyone in the Party lol.)

My fan theory is that it was actually Sam who leaked Mr Tickels medical details to the press. She thought she was doing something to help Malcolm, and he could hardly drop her it once it all got out of hand, could he? If they ever make a sequel this would explain how Malcolm is not in jail. Nobody could ever quite prove anything because he was actually innocent.

Just finished watching this then rewatched the inquiry episode. It’s kind of amazing because you can get a very different perspective by just watching Sam react to everyone. She smiles and laughs every time Malcolm’s insults are read out and she glares with fury at Robyn when she badmouths Malcolm. Wonderfully subtle performance

She starts crying at the inquiry when it becomes obvious that Malcolm will be taking the fall to protect the party. I think it's less out of worry for her own job and more so for him, since the job is pretty much his life. There's clearly a friendly affection there.
@Isleofskye5 жыл бұрын
I realise this is fiction and after working in Central London for the last 47 years since 1971 I am as cynical as they come but she was upset for him. If she did cry at losing her job it would have been in private. Imagine with all that chaos going on everyone stopping because Sam is crying because she is out of a job :)
@bonnafide26065 жыл бұрын
I got the impression that she was crying because she was being hounded by the press over something about which she was already emotionally distraught.
@mitchkroener4 жыл бұрын
She was upset for him, yes and it was a glimpse into their personal relationship, but also I think it’s meant to have the atmosphere of a coup d’état where he’s being thrown out and there’s a real sense of danger and crazed energy of people rushing around and doing ruthless shit. Check out Ianucci’s film “The Death of Stalin” for more like this. This show does so many things so well.

It always interested me how Malcolm treated Sam with such respect, and was even protective of her. She is adorable, she's the kind of girl it would be very easy to fall in love with. It shows that there's a decency about Malcolm, even a vulnerability. All the people he treats like shit are people who deserve it, or at least are fair targets as they have put themselves in the firing line - they should be able to handle it if they are to have positions of such high authority.
@LilySaintSin7 жыл бұрын
It's becuase Malcom came from a working class background, so he understands andrespects people from thatbackground. He's actually a decent guy. He's just frustrated and angry becuase he's surrounded by incompetence.
@darraghtate4407 жыл бұрын
He's paid to be a total bastard. If he's not intimidating, then the party (and, therefore, government) may well collapse. He's shown pretty consistently to only be a git to the people he has to keep in line, while he can be quite friendly to others (specifically, non-politicians and some civil servants who don't mess up their jobs). He was also seemingly remorseful about having to get Nicola's daughter's principal the sack for favouritism, as he saw that he was just trying to help a parent out.

@Eamonn Wright Nah. I saw that scene with the cleaning lady as Malcolm desperately attempting to head off a story in the Daily Mail, or something similar. 'This is what the minister is REALLY like behind closed doors' etc. I didn't see that as Malcolm just being concerned for her feelings.
@certainknotofpeace7 жыл бұрын
I've been re-watching season 3 and a part in episode 7 where Malcolm's being fired by Steve Fleming really summed up Malcolm and Sam's relationship for me. His world is crumbling around him but he finds Sam crying and surrounded by hostile people and he instantly tells them to leave her alone and tries to comfort her. I think she's one of the few people Malcolm feels any loyalty for. In the show she is both competent and quietly reliable, so I'm sure Malcolm recognises her value in the midst of all those incompetent civil servants, and knows that she's worth her weight in gold! Really nice!

I think Sam's point in the show it to make Malcolm human. He's exhausted by the political BS, a husk as he says himself. The way he cares for Sam shows his humanity rather than the thing that the job has made him.
@aec9174 Жыл бұрын
@@Haaris.Qureshi I think you're right. I watched her through Malcolm's testimony - she's sitting right behind him, so she's almost always in the shot. Prior to his testimony, all the others found one way or another to throw him under the bus, deservedly or not. While Malcolm is answering the questions, you can see the exact moment when Sam realizes that he's going down, that he's just dug his own grave. Her eyes widen, and then she closes her eyes and starts to lose it right there. I really wish they'd shot a goodbye scene for Sam and Malcolm - I think it would have been a nice way to tie up their friendship.
