Frankenstein farming at its worst being downright inhumane and unhealthy. The fact that they don't forage and and have to be micro managed tells you all you need to know about modern farming methods.

I am surprised that Highland cows didn’t make the list? Meh, I don’t think I would consider them pets. Definitely more comfortable to be around than a normal size cow. A normal size cow makes me uneasy but I think I could handle being around a ‘mini-cow’. I have already decided on the highland cattle breed, the only thing I am concerned about is the horns. Some of the other breeds look interesting, might get a mini-dexter or jersey to cross with a highland.

I had some eggs given to me that I hatched out. Most are French Black Copper Maran, but I also 3 other varieties. They all have feathered legs, so I'm assuming all are the French version. I can walk up to any of them and pick them up, but my Cuckoo Maran will get up into my lap as soon as I sit down. They are wonderful birds.

I have one mixed breed - a 3/4 wheaten maran, 1/4 white plymouth rock. She is still my baby, always the first to run to me as soon as she sees me. She looks a bit like the thumbnail you have on the orpington, but with darker collar and whiter body. She lays a brown egg with speckles, reasonable layer. I think she has only been broody once or twice (now aged 5 years).

I purchased 4 Maran chics from Tractor Supply last spring that were $5. Did they become less rare I wonder or did they mislabel them? They're black with beautiful green irredesence and feathered feet. All four of them started laying beautiful brown 🟤 eggs at less than a year and are far out biggest egg producers over the Australorps, Leghorns and Easter eggers. They're also outgoing and fun birds. We absolutely love them!

I am surprised that you did not include the Devon cattle. As they are dual purpose and were the cattle of choice by the Pioneers. They also produce up to 10 gallons of milk with a good amount of butter fat. They are also extremely docile!

My family used to call them African turkeys! Guineas that you raise can tell you from strangers. They'll give their alarm call whenever a stranger is around. If you live in a hot climate, guinea hens will lay when it's too hot for chickens to lay. But they won't lay in cold weather. If you have chickens + guineas, you will have eggs all year long. I don't like their meat, though. IMO: it's too gamey.

nobody can listen to you, because yoiu drone on and on like you are bored and you hate the topic. try getting interested and passionate about what you are talking about and yet not be fake and phoney at the same time. thats the ticket.

Here's something they don't tell you about Highland cattle. Originally they were mainly black. They were driven south, out of the Highlands of Scotland in the 18th and early 19th centuries to the great trysts (auction sales), where they were sold, slaughtered, butchered, salted and barreled, mainly to feed the Royal Navy. On the roads south from the Highlands, they had to graze and pass through the lands of other clans, such as the MacGregors, whose lands were in the Trossachs. The MacGregors and their ilk (remember Rob Roy) made a large part of their living by demanding payment to allow the driven cattle to pass through and rustling them if payment was not forthcoming and sometimes even if it was. Consequently, they were not popular, were declared outlaws and the payment became known as 'blackmail'' (originally a 'mail' was a tax) because the cattle were mainly black. The word still has the same meaning and connotation today as it had then.

My main rooster is a black Australorp. Hes been the absolute best at managing his flock. He tends to keep his distance when we enter the pen its true, but its awesome to see how he watches over the hens at all times even during feeding times.

Got a chocolate Orpington - Shes the only bird mingling with my older hens and they let her. Everyone else still gets picked on by on of my older girls, although I'm only a week in with the new girls out there, I think it's going very well.
