A Confederate POW was asked by a Union interrogator "You are poor and have no slaves, why are you fighting us?" The southerner replied "Because you are here". Wanting to defend your homeland against invaders, and defend your borders, are natural human instincts, unless of course you are a gay little Marxist liberal.

@@namelessbandchannel253 It did. Although the restored English monarchy was very good at wiping out any survival of radicalism or republicanism. England didn’t start discussing universal suffrage and individual liberty again for 150 years. In the States, I’m not sure the Civil War was ever really reconciled.

Does anyone know if the scene in Gods and Generals where 2 Irish regiments fought each other is true or not. The north had an Irish brigade, but did the South have one as well. Or was it all just made up for the film.
@jasonbritt2497
@jasonbritt2497 28 күн бұрын
Many of the Irish of the south were decedents of Irish who’d come around the revolution. When the colonial army was faltering and running out of money, the colonies promised land as payment to the soldiers of the revolution. After the war those with English ancestry received the premium land with the best farming throughout the piedmont of the south. Those of Irish ancestry were told to find land in the Indian territory of Appalachia. The northern Irish units were mostly “just off the boat” Irish. They were told upon arrival they had to fight in the war and immediately conscripted or face deportation. This was bc the war was extremely unpopular among the citizens of the north and the Army couldn’t get volunteers. Had the government of the US actually worked for the will of the people, tariffs on southern goods wouldn’t have impoverished the south for 20 years, states would have had equal representation, the federal government wouldn’t have run out of control, the south would have never succeeded and the civil war would have never happened.
