Duluth should start using this commercial again now that the city is seeing genuine growth for the first time in decades after a Harvard researcher said it would be a refuge from climate change + pandemic shifts in work.

@visitduluth3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ganesh - yes, they can! The St. Lawrence Seaway and a system of locks allow ocean-going vessels to reach Duluth from the Atlantic. It takes just under a week to navigate the seaway!

OK, let's settle some of the BS flying around here. Telly Savalas married Julie Hovland, a woman from Duluth. That may or may not be her in this commercial. She was his third wife and eventually his widow. Their daughter, jazz singer Ariana Savalas, described them as inseparable for 18 years. He did this commercial for free; he and Julie often visited Duluth, where she still has family connections. Telly was often spotted in Duluth, golfing at the Northland Country Club or dining with Julie at the Chinese Lantern, their favorite restaurant (since destroyed by a fire,) among other locations.

Thanks for this! I knew this, but not as many details so I'm glad you set the record straight. An aside: they were both at the Ski Hut one time, in fur coat doing a classic celebrity "I'll take one of those, and two of those..." while clerks scampered around. I was there, too, and I accidentally hit him in the arm with my (used) ski boots. He looked down and scowled at me. I was probably...9?

Minnesota is turning into another communist California mess of a state. I was born and raised in communist California and have lived in this liberal mess for sixty-seven years. I was going to buy a lake home in northern MN, but have changed my mind.

You can feel the sincerity of Telly here. It's hard to smile on a commercial if it's not true even when you're paid.

It's not hard. It's called acting.

@@CelticVictory but i feel that this commercial with Telly is different. Unlike in my country, it is so obvious when someone is paid and not totally willing to do commercial like this.
@CelticVictory4 жыл бұрын
@@justbeingplasma8681 Telly was a professional actor. He got paid a lot of money to pretend to feel something he didn't. And he was good at it. You can actually watch a Kimmel sketch where Jennifer Aniston pretended to be offended by the writing in the sketch. Her performance was so good that viewers wrote into the show complaining about how he treated her. Yes, emotions can be faked.

This campaign was a really big deal in the 1980s, as Duluth was trying to reinvent itself as a tourist destination. We never got many celebrities, so Gilligan & Skipper were a real treat. Sadly, both Bob Denver and Alan Hale Jr. are no longer with us.
