Yes, I can relate. Fort Wayne Indiana, I believe 73 or 74, me and my dad had constructed a cockpit cover to help wind resistance. It was great, except for when I received my helmet before I had a chance to try it out in the car. Of course, disaster struck and as soon as I had left the start the helmet kept dropping down to where I couldn't see. Brief moments of vision allowed me to get down the hill and, fortunately, not hit the young lady I was racing against. As I hit the line, out of control, I took out the local TV's camera and survived. Well, my brother found a 20-dollar bill while we were there.

I have witnessed one far worse but was so long ago that people didn't have cellphones to easily record it. In Columbia, SC on Taylor street by the State Post Office, kid went a little sideways and crashed through the barrier and almost took out the other racer.
