what size mesh you planning on running and how are you fishing it? floating it (with weighted bottom), sinking it (mud line weighted heavy to keep the net on the bottom and running smaller floats to keep it upright but submerged), or flag webbing (floats on top line, no weights on bottom). I like to hang gill on 1/3 and run double selvage top row of meshes and run a main line through them. Tie the webbing to the main line every 3 feet. depending on what your fishing, #9 is the absolute biggest twine your should need for gill net.

How do you go about cutting a sheet of webbing correctly so you can sew it together and make the tube for a hoop net,? I did it once but dnt for the life of me redo it ! The net I'm making right now needs 20 meshes to cover the frame ( it's a concrete remesh frames turtle net with a 6" stretched mesh ) so I figured if I'm trying it with the seamless method ( the way so the books show show when your adding a patch in a damged net) I need to cut it 19 meshes wide so she I sew it together I will basicll add a mesh and make it 20. Problem is I dint cut it correctly and I had to trim it and now I only have 19. Then I tried to practice by just cutting 8 meshes but when I sewed it up I need up with 9 meshes. Any advice ?
@johnsoncustomcalls
@johnsoncustomcalls 5 жыл бұрын
You need 19 and a half meshes, then wrap around the frame. The edges of the diamonds are gonna line up like a zipper if you can visualize that. You then start from the high corner and go across and down a half mesh to the side of the other mesh to make the knot. If you are less than 19.5 meshes, you will need to hang it up and tie it back out to 19.5 meshes. You will not jump meshes tying onto a flat panel. If you have any more questions just let me know.

Another great video ! Thanks for explaining the whole corkscrew deal! And interesting how you did your double salavage loading I always just pulled out a bunch of twine out and just doubled it lol. But this math definitely helps to get the most bang for your buck. As far as quality,honestly I think it's pretty good.much better than some other stuff I've seen. Now I do have a question. Is it possible to make your throats out of pre made webbing ? Edit : is their a good way to do it. Like working with three and four inch webbing ,it don't take too long to sew in a throat from scratch but say your making a small hoop or double throated wire framed net for something like bullhead catfish and your using like 1.75 stretch mesh. Seems like it would be pretty tedious to say the least to sew it all b to hand. It's their a good way to to cut throat out of a sheet ( I figure it would be kind of like making panels on a cast net )and sew it in ? Again awesome videos ! Been sharing them around so hope you get some more views !
@johnsoncustomcalls
@johnsoncustomcalls 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can tie throats out of prehung webbing. I would cut a whole mesh shy of the length you need and sew the last two rows by hand. Take up 2 meshes around the small end the whole way around to drop your mesh count. This won't give a real good shape to the throat but it will be faster to hang.

man thank you so much for the videos ! especially the one you just did on the hanging ratios ! i got a buddy wanting me to fix some hoop nets for him and im really feeling confident now ! now i gotta say the one thing i cannot get my head around is how you get that cork screw effect. the whole jumping thing just doesn't make sense to me, well its hard for me to comprehend i guess would be a better term lol. like when im tying my throats or bodies i start off of one of those rings that you can open and close. tie my line to the ring with a half hitch and leave like a three foot tail. i tie my half meshes on the ring to the second to the last ( if i wanted 20 i would tie to 19) i then take the line coming off of my needle and the tail line i left and use those two lines to tie one mesh (its usually a little whooped sided but not by much) to give me my total number of meshes. i dont get a corksrew effect with this method but it gives me a straight even row. also the knot is at the bottom of the mesh so when i tie that onei just bump my mesh stick up to the knot and im right where i need to be to pick up on the next rows of meshes. after the first row or mesh and a half row i can undo the ring and thread the top row of half meshes on a piece of twine,usually just some #15. if you tie on the ring too long you can get a whopped sidded net.having it on a rope loop lets the even thing self even out from my experience.Not say your way doesn't work because its pretty obviously does just sharing my way lol. buy the way thanks for the shout out ! Also ! the whole mutiples of 6 thing takes alot of guess work out of how i tie my throats up figured out with a flat throat turtle trap with a 18 mesh start i can split the throat even in half so i have 9 on the top and bottom well i take that odd mesh on either end (so now i have 8 mesh on top and 8 on the bottom) and tie them static to the inside of the cage to stretch out the throat flat. then pick up the meshes with a doubles piece of #15 like you would rigging up a gill net to the float or lead line and tie them taut to the static lines . this gives me such a beautiful flat throat and very easy compared to my old method . i actually need to make a few more turtle traps since my old ones werent cared for properly while i was gone so they need to be replaced so i may do a video on the matter soon ! Thanks again !

Also, if you are gonna be tying a couple of identical nets, you can get the webbing already tied for about a dollar more per pound than a roll of twine. If your doing it to try and make some money, get the pre hung webbing and tie the throats by hand. It takes way too long to tie it all by hand to try and make money at it. Been there, done that. Also, I suggest a fiberglass hoop if your building them to sell. Pass the cost on the the consumer. The metal hoops rot out and are not as strong. Glass hoops will last far longer that the webbing itself, and they won't get damaged as easily. I will be doing a video on wooden hoops but there is no way I would sell a net worth wooden hoops. They fish much better but require a lot care care.

hay man i gotta give you a little update. Man this math has made life so much easier tying these nets up ! now i dont have to have my head stuck all up inside one of my frames to sew up a throat just punch in a few numbers in the ole calculator and i can sew up a throat on the bench in a nice comfortable position then just mark the knot spacing on the frame with a sharpie and taper measure and just sew the throats in ! its so nice ! now i do have one more question. what you where showing was for a 50% ratio what would you do to calculate for say a 30% or 60% ratio ?
@johnsoncustomcalls
@johnsoncustomcalls 5 жыл бұрын
Awesome news bro! I am glad it's helping someone else. As for changing the hanging ratio, that gets more into walls of webbing and less into hoop nets. I have a video planned for that when I tie the leads for this net. Also, I have the video edited on my computer of how I tie my throats, just need to upload it. The way I tie my throats though, you have to add or subtract 6 meshes to the overall count for them to come out right. This means that you never tie on a specific ratio. Also, adding or subtracting meshes to alter your ratio changes the shape of your throat. It may not choke down fast enough and leave a big center hole, or it may choke down too fast and not have a funnel shape to it. For hoop nets, stick with what is in the video. An old man showed me that trick and told me "don't go monkeying around trying to do something better, cause it won't work." So far, he's been right.
@TheBlackTrapper

So how do you go about connecting the ends so the net is tubular? I've always left a few feet of tag on one end when I make my meshes. So when i come around I just pinch the two and do a double over hand and sinch knot up or down till give me the right size mesh.
@johnsoncustomcalls
@johnsoncustomcalls 5 жыл бұрын
I actually drop down one mesh so the net makes a corkscrew. I will have to do a video showing how that works. It's a little wonkey for the first 5 or 6 meshes but the only time you have to tie back on is when you reload your needle.

Sweet ! Now I been taking notes on how you do your measurement but I have a question. Now I have always measured by half meshes and full meshes. I usually refer to the full mesh like my turtle nets are 3" mesh so my half meshes are 1.5". And two of those will give me a 3" mesh. Now I'm slightly confused about what your calling a bar mesh. It seems to me a bar mesh and a half mesh are the same . Is that right ? If so I'm slightly confused where you getting 1.5" from 2" mesh. Wouldn't a two inch mesh give a 1" half /bar mesh ?. Sorry I'm really really intrested in how you do you math just not super sure we're speaking quite the same language when it comes to terminology is all lol. Also will you be doing a video possibly on sewing on ordering a sheet of premade netting and sewing it on some hoops ? Please keep them coming !
@johnsoncustomcalls
@johnsoncustomcalls 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a bar is a half mesh. It measures the "bar" or length between the knots. When ordering prehung (sheets) of webbing, it is always measured in bar (half) mesh. You will see length measured as "stretched" mesh which is confusing because it isn't based on mesh size. Also, hanging ratio comes into play on ordering prehung webbing. I need to make an order of webbing and do a video on it. I'm not too far from tying the leads this will give me some material to work with and explain walled webbing. Hoop nets figure different than wall webbing. Edit: as for the 2" mesh, that was just a peice I had laying around to show an example and make the math easier. The net in the series is 1.5" webbing, which is 3" stretched or whole mesh.. if you have any questions about any of it, post your hoop size and webbing and I can help you with the math.

I have never commented about anybodys way of fishing or rigging up, but I think I will at this time. To start with, You are doing 90% of the same way I rig my lines. I like a double leader line , That allows me to change my hooks out, because one might be too large for the bait i'm using, or might be broke. Next, my main line is rigged a little different. I use a very heavy main line with swivels about 6 ft. apart because I like to keep my next fish in the water while i'm taking the one before . I tie two knots about an inch apart that my swivels can't slip over. They go around my main line like yours do. I use clips like you do. It's nice to be able to take all my hooks off of a throw line to deal with a large fish at hand. That helps from getting a hook in my hand, if the fish desides to go back to the bottom. There's a few things I do a little different, But, for the most part I'd say you are on the right track. Keep the good work up. ETex Johney

+Blake Libby the first thing to do is check your local fishing regulations and see if there is a restriction on net size. I know in Louisiana pretty much anything larger than 1" mesh is legal. in Arkansas however you have to have a commercial license and mesh size must be 2.5" or larger. the bigger the mesh the larger twine size you need. I like using #9 for 1"-1.5" mesh, #12 for 1.25-2" mesh, "15 for 1.75"-2.5" mesh, and #18 for anything 2" up.

Hi Dalton, First, I would like to say your video is a great starting point for anyone trying to build their own nets. I watched your first video of starting the shuttle and making the first two rows of mesh. It makes total sense how you need to roll the shuttle to keep the line straight(I think everyone has to experience that once to understand). I understood the method of alternating left hand knots and right hand knots so that your line doesn't end up twisted and fighting you as you continue further into the knotting of the net. Your very good at explaining those "fundamental rules". Other KZbin videos I have watched have left out those key elements ;) Great job. I would love to see the part 3 video of how to continue on with connecting and expanding the number of mesh count as you go along the perimeter of the net. Also, how to continue using different shuttles of line since Im guessing you must run out of line eventually? Thanks in advance for your first two videos! Blake

I have been watching SustenanceandCovering's channel and he has been very helpful. I have #6 and #9 twine. Waiting on #4 to show-up. Watched how to make mistakes and how to solve them. I guess I'm ready in about a week. Perhaps I can share my video with you? It would be nice to have a buddy to work with. I'm over 40 and I am going to do it! Cheers, Michael.

+Michael Wood I have to locate my #3 bonded twine to work on this some more. I think I'm gonna start a series for a hoop net. I tie mine similar enough to get the picture and the larger mesh makes it easy to video. Just need time now to get it started..

Given the strength to size ratio I would use braided fishing line. If you could run across a deal on a pound or so, I use fire line crystal on my rods and i have yet to break it. Gar don't even fray it. If your going to build a 12 foot net, I suggest using larger mesh. 1/2 inch goes VERY slow when you get to about 3 foot.

Ran across your post on a site thats pretty cool. I just got back from trying to find a large cast net, I want a 12' ish. I have a 6, thats been good for bait. But the prices of the large nets is ridiculous . So I am going to make one. Time to research!!!!!!!Also I want one tougher than store bought. In Fla. pulling up oyster clumps etc happens a lot. Rip rip rip....

I got my twine grime memphis net and twine. The next one I make will be out of braided fishing line. It's more expensive but it's half the size so there would be less drag allowing the net to fall faster. You could get a bulk spool from eBay cheap.
