My late dad used to catch bus home in 60s in Sheffield put his work clothes on go back to Sheffield and go kick the persons arse who wanted a fight with him. Always ended up him taking them to the hospital 🤣

Disappointing not to see any reference to what is perhaps Sheffield’s most distinctive aspect of pub culture; the pub carolling tradition on the northwestern edge of the city. Between Remembrance Day and Christmas, pubs in the area have unique and varied repertoires of local carols. It’s often standing room only!

Only thing I knew about Sheffield before this was Steel. My Chef gave me his Sheffield steel 12inch knife as a 1st yr apprentice. He had it 40 yr. Ive used it since 1988. Damn good knife. Carbon steel best bit of blade I ever had. I got maybe 30 kitchen knives, 12 ar so bayonets and several fighting knives pocket knives ( hey did aplrenticeship and went into Infantary lol) that 12 incher is the BEST blade I own. That aside, Im Aussie, from Newcastle. We made better railway lines and plate that you poms ever could😜

Although not from there, I lived in Sheffield for over 20 years. The Hallamshire was great, if a little run down, before they knocked all the separate rooms out. Good to see the Grapes is still intact. Had some crazy times in there.

Glad to see the Grapes given a mention, the Dog & Partridge has also kept the same kind of floor plan. Really hope we don't lose these two pubs after the covid crisis :(

There's hardly any decent pubs in Sheffield now. West Street is awful and definitely to be avoided.

Thanks for an interesting video about Sheffield's pub scene. I do find it strange, however, that you failed to mention the Kelham Island Tavern which won "Best Pub in England" on a number of occasions. This surely makes it Sheffield most significant public house. Nevertheless, I enjoyed you video and will pay a visit to some of the pubs mentioned. I live walking distance from the Sheffield Tap and have never been in. This will change today!
