Imagine if thousands of years ago, someone in China designed something like this out of bronze, set it up so that it was powered by a constant water source like a spring, and left it run forever. If they would have marked each gear with the numbers “0 through 9”, every important event in their history could have been recorded using this machine as a decimal time stamp. It would be a perfect way to record history on a common timeline, regardless of what future planet we may find ourselves on, and whatever local planetary time might be used there. This could be used until literally the end of time. Fascinating device indeed.
