Exactly how this symphony should be played. Admittedly, I never got into Vorisek. And a majority of ensembles rush through this piece. Which comes off as choppy and way too quirky. Not this performance. Excellent. May I suggest the Hofmeister symphonies with Howard Griffiths conducting. A must have.

This is a wonderful recording of Janacek's sinfonietta. Colin Davis and the orchestra have done a magnificent job. I think this is the best recording of Janacek's sinfonieta I have ever heard. Your right, KZbin really knows how to screw up a great recording with all those awful commercials. Anyways, I have found my way around that without paying. Thank you so much for uploading this. I have enjoyed it immensely.
@Qualityy-Musicc3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! Yes, this really is "quality music" (hence the name of my channel). Too bad that Colin Davis didn't record more Janáček. Or to be precise: It's a shame that he didn't record Janáček's music at all. I would rate this performance above Kubelík's with the same orchestra.
@lednew20103 ай бұрын
After listening a second time, this performance is now my "go to" recording. Pintscher gets it all SO right, especially his slightly faster tempi throughout. Too often conductors take things much too slow in this work, trying to bring gravitas to this symphony while ignoring Copland's marking "with simple expression." Well, this performance hits it right on target, always flowing ahead, making its point and moving along nicely. I hope KC can record this (and keep that percussion so beautifully balanced, especially the tubular bells at the end which are almost always buried and lost).
@Qualityy-Musicc3 ай бұрын
Again, I agree. The fact that Pintscher is a composer (and, btw, a quite successful one) may contribute to his eagerness to reveal as much of the inner workings of the score as possible. And yes, especially the drum and percussion parts are carefully delineated. The end is wonderfully punchy without getting harsh. The German radio engineers did a terrific job, too. Unfortunately, the broadcast was slightly compressed. -- On a last note: In an interview before the concert, Pintscher expressed his deep admiration for Copland and this Symphony in particular. He called it an American pendant to Bruckner.
@andrewpetersen52723 ай бұрын
Not sure of the meaning of his observation. I do hope he programs some American composers while he is in KC. Barber, Cowell, Ives, Thomson, Thompson, Dello Joio, Menotti, etc.

So great to hear the original (uncut) ending played here. It's a bit of a shock at first, but it makes the argument that Bernstein was wrong and Copland was right.
@Qualityy-Musicc3 ай бұрын
I definitely agree! I've never understood why Bernstein (and others) thought the original ending was too much of a good thing. It accumulates so much more positive energy. And here, Pintscher and the KCS nail it!

Bolet had made his Carnegie Hall début with this concerto. On 29 January 1932, at Carnegie Hall in New York, a seventeen-year-old Jorge performed with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra under Fritz Reiner. Many eminent musicians were in the audience, including Sergei Rachmaninoff, Hofmann, Godowsky, violinist Nathan Milstein and pianist Vladimir Horowitz (b.1903). Jorge played the first movement of Tchaikovsky's B-flat minor concerto (the programme also included Weber's Oberon overture and Brahms's fourth symphony). A review in The New York Times declared: ‘He has a brilliant technique. From the thunderous succession of chords that open the pianist’s part...he was equal to the technical difficulties. More, he played with the fine abandon of youth.’ Jorge recalls: 'At that performance, I also had the good fortune of meeting Rachmaninoff. During the second half, my teacher David Saperton took me up to Godowsky’s box to hear the remainder of the concert. When the concert was over, Godowsky grabbed me by the arm and said, ‘There’s somebody I want you to meet.’ Simultaneously Rachmaninoff was coming out of an adjoining box putting on his big overcoat with the sable collar, Godowsky spoke to Rachmaninoff in Russian, so I don’t know what was said. But we shook hands and passed a few pleasantries before he hurried off.'
