Great information and comparison. I love them both! I love that you used Yamaha as well. I’ve had a LL16 R for years along with a LS TA which is concert all solid with Rosewood. Sold the LL. Seems like the smaller body focuses the rosewood and mitigates some of the boominess. Is that a word?🤣 it’s now my go to church worship leading guitar. But, I’m always on the look out for the next one😉so many great options!

I have a mid 70's Alvarez Yairi DY85 that has mahogany sides, and the back is a 3 piece with, jacaranda in the center piece, mahogany outside pieces. I also have a DY85 that is 2 piece back in all jacaranda. To my knowledge, jacaranda is an Indonesian type of wood similar to rosewood. To me, the jacaranda is brighter wider frequency range than mahogany. The one piece doesn't seem to make much difference.

I have a 1945D18 a 2013 d18 and 1995 Santa Cruz TR. the old D 18 is really dry sounding with few overtones. The Tr is rosewood of course and I would call it more lush, more overtones and more low end. To my ears the old 18 is louder. Some of what I may be hearing is due to bracing differences. The old D18 is transition between scalloped and straight bracing Martin did for a time called tapered bracing while the TR is scalloped. The newer D18 is forward shifted and scalloped with more bass than the old one but still less overtones than the TR. love them all, but if I had the choice of going to only one tonewood, I would take mahogany preferably a 1936 to 1939 D 18 ( best guitar I ever played was a 1939 D 18). Tonewood sound however is one thing since if I had to play again in a band, I would take the Tr since I like the way it feels due to neck shape and width.

Wild. I have guitars made of koa, maple, mahogany, and rosewood. I normally prefer the sound of rosewood, but in this sound sample I prefer the mahogany. I’ve always heard mahogany records better. I wonder if I would have preferred the rosewood if I was in the room with you? Did your preference change from in room to recording? Thanks for the video guys.
@BanjoBenКүн бұрын
No, I still prefer the sound of the mahogany even listening back to the video. I definitely don't hate the rosewood, though. I actually love it, but the mid-heavy mahogany is what I prefer.

A few things to note: the pickguard on the FG5 and FS5 are not actually made of wood. They are plastic pickguards with a wood grain sticker placed on top of them. Many owners have had issues with the sticker starting to peel off. Secondly the Fg3/5 and Fs3/5 (as well as the Yamaha A series) all run on AA batteries and they are notorious for burning through batteries quickly. Somewhere around 3 hours worth of plugged in time before you have to swap them out. Around here most acoustic gigs are about 3 hours long so if you own any of these and plan on gigging, make sure to bring some extra batteries just in case. Otherwise absolutely amazing guitars. My favorite brand for acoustics.
