Are you mixing your chemistry with the hot agar or you layering it on top. Great process and great work. Trying to figure it out here in Singapore. Thanks for any help you may have

Wonder if you could use transparent glaze and then glaze fire to seal them instead of using varnish

If you get a low fire glaze or low fire the cyanotype cone 4 then glaze after. It will turn orange :)

Hi Jo! These cyanotypes are absolutely beautiful! I’ve tried this technique before, but I didn’t pay enough attention to my porcelains, and they eventually faded to a greyish hue. I think I didn’t put in enough effort with the cold washes, which allowed them to continue developing. Do you have any tips for stopping the development process on porcelain? Also, what varnish do you use at the end? Is it UV resistant? I really want to try again but this time I want to make sure my cyanotypes survive
Love this especially because you did it live so I could be clear about how to do it. Love your style-it feels like I am haveing a secret chat with you in your home. Wondering if you could do one about toning or using things that give it a turquoise color.

Hi! Just found your live demo on Facebook and really enjoyed it. I was wondering, could you paint on the cyanotype wash after you weave the papers? Would that make rinsing easier? Thanks for sharing, I really appreciated your explaining the benefits of using the grow light for it being a perfect overhead exposure. :)
@JoHowell3 ай бұрын
If you paint the weave after it’s woven you will definitely have uneven coverage because the cyanotype will want to grip into the crevices :) have fun! Try one that way in case I’m wrong ❤️
@kedrynevans62403 ай бұрын
@@JoHowell thank you for this, I haven't done much cyanotype and I think I will have to test this out. I love weaving paper and the look it creates, so I am excited to experiment. It does make me feel like a kid again when I weave paper as well. Take care!

Nice job ...In the past I with others I have formed a CIC for charitable endeavour. So go for it and good luck. Surely the Arts Council can get behind you due to the heritage if nothing else ?? Put a call out to all artistic glass workers they'll get behind your efforts I am sure. I am a 'cyanotyper' and was checking out your videos for ceramics and came across your cause.

Just discovered cyanotype today and found your videos. Loads of useful information, thank you! I would really like to give this a go. I notice your negatives are larger than I'm used to seeing. I know you're a photographer and have access. How would a non-photographer find something like this? Your video was great btw, loved the content.
@JoHowell5 ай бұрын
Aw thank you 🙏 I use acetate to print my negatives but you can use tracing paper as well. I have a laser printer which was really cheap only prints black. Honestly contrast is king with cyanotype. Inkjet doesn’t hold the ink as well :)

Jo, I recently got a kiln and I have been doing Cyanotype for the past year on paper. Is there any safety concerns for firing in a kiln? I have my kiln vented from the bottom to the outdoors. I can't find a lot of info for the firing of the cyanotype but I would love to try it.
@JoHowell6 ай бұрын
Don’t varnish if you are going to fire. I would fire overnight when there’s less people to inhale anything noxious but it should be about the same as iron oxide. Do cone 3 firing first. The cyanotype has a burnout point that’s quite low. Good luck! Find me on instagram and let me see your experiments :)

I haven’t. I’m not sure it would work… Give it a go. All my ceramic tiles are varnished but I’ll be doing some new tiles for a Patreon lesson soon. I might have a go with one before the varnish stage. Good question.
