KETTEL SILADS, exists around the world under the same name. The kettle refers to castle that the island would hold in other parts of the world, so presumably our kettle island is no different from the rest of them. No actual kettles involved, you would not see a kettle hanging over the fire from Ottawa side, and no kettles have ever been found on it but what does exist there are old ruins.

I've been fasted with Ottawa's hidden history and have uncovered really unexpected things that isn't widely spoken about. I often go to explore historic buildings, basements, landscapes, islands on Ottawa river and beyond to revel hidden past. The most mind blowing part of history about Ottawa is original massive rail road infrastructure that long has been dismantled but did leave tracks and often are seen from google earth and old footage still captures some of them. If ever you wanted to collaborate and explore some really captivating items, I am totally game.

Augusta Florence King nee Snow was a member. She was the wife of Dr. Frederick King who was responsible for getting the Dominion Observatory built, although he died before it was born. Augusta and Fred lived in Observatory House at the Experimental Farm. I believe it was he that donated the boundary post; I know he DID donate a boundary post. Fred was part of the party that surveyed the boundary line between the U.S. and Canada in the mid to late 1800s. They had a daughter who was a member as well. Florence and Fred were my great aunt and uncle.

The most well known tunnel, no longer accessible to the general public is the tunnel between the Chateau Laurier Hotel and the old Union Station. Then there is the Hull Electric street car loop, next to the Chateau Laurier that is closed off and used for storage. Isn't there a vault under the Bank of Canada where gold bullion was stored in the past?

There is a vault under the Bank of Canada on Wellington St. There was also a tunnel under Kent St linking the Bank of Canada building to the modern building behind St Andrew's Church.

Wonderful video, I’ve studied on my own Ottawa’s subterranean facilities just from previous knowledge and meeting the right people…. When I was younger I went to the pooley’s bridge as a cyclist it’s a very nice place to check out…. And I KNEW that the infrastructure was built out of a pre existing tunnel that went underneath the downtown core it’s so obvious just by looking at it.

Andrew king, the knowledge you have and the knowledge I’ve researched just gives me goosebumps as the video continues on… it’s so cool to know somebody out there has the same level of interest as I do into this! You should reach out.

I remember driving right up to the front door of parliament hill after midnight getting out and walked around. It was fun before 9/11

Imagine being able to buy a lot on Kettle Island for 450$, which is about 2,700$ in 2024 bucks. Heck, its one years pay for a farm hand in 1914.

The iron door by the canal under the National War Memorial was used by the Governor General’s Foot Guards during the summer for sentry duties at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Nowadays, I believe any military regiment can stand guard at the Tomb. But when I was a Foot Guard in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and was assigned sentry duty for the day, we would hang out down there in between shifts. To my recollection, it was a vast, dark and damp cemented space with a small wooden and dry-walled lounge area and toilet built in the middle of the enclosure. If I remember correctly, there was another iron door inside the cemented space that was always locked.

There have been rumors about an entrance to tunnels that run to Kingston through the war memorial statue under the horse.

What a wonderful presentation, so engaging! You have done a brilliant job integrating the story of Oakes and the historical, social and economic context of this story. My mother knew the Duchess of Windsor in Nassau at the time, and described her as the most charismatic person she had ever met. Thank you so much ! I am looking forward to your next book.

What about the underground caves outside of Thurso, Québec.?? I tried to do a subterranean search there .. but my cell phone called 911_on me.. who showed up 15 hours later on the 2nd day. Also .. was there a Place Ville Marie with a theater on, I believe, Queen Street? It was on the west side of Bank Street..??

In 1866 here in Hamilton we had to call out our militia to fend off the Fenians, also defeated them at the Battle of Ridgeway down Niagara Way. I believe the Fenians did kill Thomas D'Arcy McGee.

I kayak often to Kettle island. I don't recall the wild turkeys. There are many bird specifies. What I really enjoy about the island are the family of Deers ! If there are people doing a walk through the island. I would be interested to join.
