What if you don’t have a green house! Will a garage work?
@JoesGarden
@JoesGarden Күн бұрын
Hi, Thanks for watching. A garage will work just fine, as long as it is kept frost free. As it is now the dormant stage, very little watering is required. Just keep an eye on it to make sure the soil is does not dry out. If possible having the plant wrapped up in fleece would also add another protective layer.

Unless you are living in the North pole that is over kill in my opinion. Tree ferns need water all through the winter to keep them moist Its when the produce next years fronds . They are hardy to minus 15 and only need the top foot protecting in very cold winters . Straw in the top helps and a small amount of fleece round the top foot but you should change it after a month or so to stop rot .

A tip from TV programme is to put mesh over the drainage hole then add the crockery to stop slugs entering from drainage hole. Also put sharp grip around hosta. Finally a garlic spray once a week and after if rains.

Hostas in a pot just stand the pot in a tray of water because slugs can’t swim

Hi thank you for the handy tips,but I’m afraid hedgehogs only eat a very small proportion of slugs when they are very very hungry. Slugs carry parasites that make hedgehogs very ill. They are certainly great to have living in our gardens but best to leave them as undisturbed as possible. Just leave out water and perhaps a shallow dish of chicken kitten biscuits and overgrown areas of the garden to encourage our wildlife and they will repay you.

What is in the container for a mulch? I thought you said lambs wool? The bottle spray is just garlic boiled? I’ve never had a pet hedgehog before but if I can keep it from running off I’m ready. The snails are horrific and clearly the slugs like certain hostas. They are invading my garden

Hi Paul, without seeing it, I'd suspect that slugs and snails could potentially have laid eggs in the soil in the previous season.

Further tips: 1. place beer in a shallow container partially dug in. Snails love beer. 2. Buy in a garden shop copper tape and wrap it around your pots. Snails and slugs will not climb over it. It is not cheap but will work an entire season.

Joe - I’m considering transplanting a few hostas from pots into the ground - and replant under my tree fern. I’ll try the plastic for extra moisture. It’s risky though owing to the slugs. Once those fresh shoots start appearing in Spring - you’ll need to keep a sharp eye out for them. Still nothing ventured.

Lovely tree fern Joe. I purchased one mid way last year similar size to your one. It has kept its fronds over winter and they now have a nice copper tinge to the edges. I’ve just gone out to check for knuckles - one so far! I bought a Trachycarpus Fortunei about 10 years ago which stands about 14 feet tall - lower leaves still intact. These pair of of trees now give a well established look to the garden.

Hi Joe, great Chanel, I have just bought a tree fern 3 foot, I am going to put it in a pot, how many inches deep should it go in the soil?
@JoesGarden
@JoesGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching the video. Normally If i were to plant a Tree Fern, I would plant it directly into the soil about 2 inches deep. I would then stake around the Tree Fern to stop it from moving for at least 3months. If you was to plant the Tree Fern into a plant pot, I would plant it about 4 inches deep at the minimum. Hope this helps.
