Were you planning on glueing it back on ? That's extreme restoration isn't it?

@@sirjohncool I consider it conservation, everything I did to the book is for the most part reversible, but all of conservation is a form of restoration, so yes.

Love these process vids. Never used it, but that Polytex? paper is pretty impressive. Seems like it wouldn't hold with all that water/movement. Another fine job, KK. 👍
@KollectingKaos5 күн бұрын
It's actually Hollytex paper I kept mispronouncing it in the video and is very similar to Remay paper. I prefer it to Remay as it seems to be more resiliant. It is an non-woven spunbound polyester fabric.

I like most of the comic book covers to the Phantom Stranger series. A gothic feel, but not quite horror. And 20 cent DC and Marvel comics are my favorites.
@KollectingKaos21 күн бұрын
I'm a fan of them as well, but then they do remind me of a time when you could buy 80 new comics for a days wages! That is if you were lucky enough to find a job that paid $2 an hour

Cool Gold Key painted style covers are cool. The prices rocked up with the movies and now are settling back down. And you, with others on youtube, have introduced a new generation to a wide range of Golden Age and Silver Age titles of lesser known characters. Comics are collectibles, and should not really be considered an investment in the short term. Cool topic.
@KollectingKaosАй бұрын
I've always looked at them as long term investments of 20 years or more.

It is hard to sell what you collect. You seem to be better than most at letting go of the titles that no longer hold your interest.

Grading is a scam.
@KollectingKaosАй бұрын
Do you mean paying a company to assign a grade based on the condition, or all grading including that done by people privately with years of experience?
@michaelmayrend313Ай бұрын
If this comic had less tanned pages how high could the grade move on this comic? Maybe blue light treatments on the inside pages.
@KollectingKaosАй бұрын
Considering the additional small stains on the back cover that I found while I was cleaning it, I would not grade it above a 6.0 even if it had cream to tan pages.

Good job, and I agree that adding humidity with the steamer will work wonders. I'll press comics twice, three times, four times, etc. Whatever it takes if the value in the comic is there. Those wrinkles would most likely disappear with another press or two, if you were so inclined.
@KollectingKaosАй бұрын
I suspect you are correct, I was just curious as to how it would look after a single pressing, with my long cold press follow up. I may go ahead and do a second pressing.

@@KollectingKaos The variation in the cover stock was something I had not seen before.
@KollectingKaosАй бұрын
@@michaelmayrend313 Over the last 90 years comics had had cardstock covers, gimmick covers, newsprint covers, magazine style covers (think thicker slick paper stock like the silver and bronze age) and the newer thinner slick paper covers that are nearly the same as the interior paper stock. It makes doing any sort of a hot press a real nightmare as each paper stock for the cover should use a different setting from 135 degrees to 200 all depending on the paper, and atmospheric conditions where you happen to be.
