Plot twist: Driveway was fine, the driver was just hammered
@traytonjay26702 ай бұрын
Thanks for your video - that technique for measuring preload was invaluable for me. I just put a Quaife in our 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible with the 2.8L (B284) engine and F40 6-speed MT. Am also converting to single mass flywheel and Stage 3+ clutch to hold over 400HP wheel. Although the Saab spec indicates a rather generic 32010X taper bearing (widely used as wheel bearings), I found that bearing choice matters. I think my OEM diff bearings were probably Timken - these have larger (and fewer) rollers than a FAG (Schaeffler) and General bearing I tried initially. The FAG and General bearings with smaller rollers seemed to leave significant play when installed with the OEM shim. Using the Timken bearings, the Quaife height measured less than.002" different from the OEM. I needed to add shim thickness to attain enough preload, but GM has terminated the shim parts. I found stainless .01 and .02 mm shims with suitable (70mm) ID on McMaster Carr's website - $12 for both, including shipping (part numbers are 98089A513 and 98089A634 respectively) . The McMaster shim OD is too large, so I traced it with the OEM shim as template, then trimmed with tin snips. The .01mm layered on the OEM (1.07 mm) shim gave me right at 18 inch pounds of rotational resistance. Word to the wise on parts selection... the reason for pulling the trans was that one of the CV driveshafts twisted inside the OEM diff - damaged the splines. It seems the drive shaft material (or the hardening process) was not adequate.... don't skimp on CV shaft quality (price), if your gonna push alot of power...
I love his determination but he could have just walked up on the grass haha

Honestly most would have left that package at the curb and said they would have had to come get it, cause residents should salt their property and this is dangerous. But he did great good for him. I can tell he's new on the job loo
