Just visited our local Lincoln Tech. today, to check out the school with our son, who says he wants to be an auto mechanic. Been there, done that. I wasted too many years of my life in that dead end career. I told him, "Don't do it. You can probably do okay if you take HVAC or electrical, but you DON'T want to be an auto mechanic!"

Tesla is hourly but you have productivity metrics that mimic flat rate and if you can't produce 70% you can be marked off track. Their labor times aren't any better and alot of the shops are sub par. I've seen people need to do steering racks on jack stands.
@TunerZen
@TunerZen Ай бұрын
I had a job offer at tesla and I denied it. One, the pay was low for a level 3 tech and also I figured that math out too woth what the hiring manager told me about it. While I don't have an issue with working on jack stands. Although now that I'm older I'm feeling it. But jobs like that take even longer to do which slows everything down in the long run.
@Alss383
@Alss383 Ай бұрын
@TunerZen what makes it worse is that you also have to find a good spot in my shop to do it. Then they want you to do it just as fast as someone working on a lift. We even had to modify small drive on lifts to replace inverters and drive units. Normally those lifts are used for tires and brakes. They pay lower and it takes forever to get a raise especially now. Bottom line if your a master tech at a good flat rate shop don't even bother working for Tesla because it's a waste of time. We lost alot of guys to Rivian because they couldn't get raises.
@Alss383
@Alss383 Ай бұрын
@TunerZen Tesla doesn't give out stocks like they used to either. They take time to vest once they decide to give you some. A new hire bonus was $5,000 cash or in stocks but you had to complete almost a year to start the process then a percentage is awarded quarterly so you don't get it all at once. That way if they lay you off you only get what was given to you at the time. Same applies if you quit. It's just a perk with strings attached.

@TunerZen it's sad because lazy people don't last in the company. We lost good people during the lay offs. It's not like Twitter. We had a super tech that traveled the country to help other stores and he lost his job too. A supervisor at one of the plants would shower at work and sleep in his car also lost his job. He fully embraced the Elon work mindset for nothing.

Challenges I can handle. Example of that is a 21 ford f150 I'm dealing with with the 360 view after a mirror swap. Normally programming and LIN initialization and ADAS calibration is all that is needed but I'm still having issues with the imaging. This 06 chevy was just old and is worn out so things just break even when you're careful and that's what still gets under my skin about thus industry. Lol

Cars from beginning of the technology race of the 2000s, can sometimes be a lot worse than cars today. I mean the famous pic of the BMW engine outside the car but with all connected says it all 😅 You can't tell it's an engine under all the housings and cables. I'm not a mechanic myself, but I listen to those who work with modern cars and the trend has been positive the last few years. Cars are finally becoming simpler again 👍 But electric..
@TunerZen
@TunerZen 2 ай бұрын
Well some makes I will agree. But over the last 8 years I've been doing this something I've learned with modern cars is a lot less smaller parts because of everything being electronic. When it comes to diagnostic and finding a problem most of the time it's a sensor or something like just bad fuel throwing shit off. Also something where the money is at is programming and ADAS. Which I'll be doing full in depth videos in the future.

@@TunerZen - I used to get steering columns like this out of the junk yard for $40 to $100 without the airbag in them... sometimes they just left it in.
