Bro you just offended half of Helsinki by calling Jokerit it's biggest team. For those who dont know Helsinki is the battleground for probably the most fiercest sport rivalry in Finland, between HIFK (Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna, Helsingfors) and Jokerit and btw HIFK is the better of the two when it comes to medals. Pre-2014 HIFK has achieved 7 Finnish Championships, 5 Silver Medals and 9 Bronze medals while Jokerit only 6 Finnish Championships, 6 Silvers and 2 Bronze medals. HIFK and Jokerit also played in 3 Winter Classics in 2011, 2012 and 2014 with HIFK winning all 3. The 2014 Winter Classic is particularly important because its the last time HIFK and Jokerit played against one another and before the Winter Classic, game wins between HIFK and Jokerit against each other were 105-105 which is why it was advertised as the game to decide who was the King in Helsinki, HIFK won 2-1 winning the Kingship of Helsinki

Thanks for the great video, good to hear a foreign perspective and nice to see you agree on basically all the points. There was no real benefit in selling Jokerit to Russia, other than not getting killed and 'appeasing' the Russian bear for a short while. This used to be Finnish foreign policy towards Russia before Russia launched its full scale war against Ukraine. Now almost all official links are cut off between the two countries and only these shady links remain. Removing these ties is now number one priority in Finland, but since especially Eastern Finland used to rely heavily on Russian tourism and import-exports, it's also now a financial back country that needs innovative R&D and foreign investments. If done right, these investments will modernize Finland but if Finns trust the wrong people, it only escalates the economic and social imbalance between West-East, North-South in Finland.

Hearing foreigners pronounce finnish names and words is literally my favorite hobby 💀

the khl jokerit went bakrupt so new guys created new jokerit who are playing at mestis (second tier of finnish hockey) from season 23-24 onwards plans to get to liiga at some point. Hartwall arena is still owned by russians but Helsinki might try to take it back by force. Also thing isnt clear with Liiga wiith it expanding to 16 teams next year with kiekko-espoo so there might not be even room for jokerit there

I'm a Dundee Stars fan, a Scottish hockey team that play in the UK's EIHL. There was a similar story with the KHL trying to establish a London-based team. Yep, a team on the other side of the continent. Unsure why they would bother doing that considering the London Knights collapsed after just a season. I think it's better if teams stick to their country's respective leagues so that way we can strengthen ourselves domestically and encourage homegrown talent rather than giving into money and greed.

Currently they are playing the Finnish 2nd League: Mestis. Up until like 2014 or somewhere around that time, the winner of Mestis was promoted to Liiga but not anymore. Jokurit don't even play in their big arena but instead have to settle with their practice arena instead to play games in Mestis, and surprisingly, Jokurit haven't won a single season as of yet. I don't know the situation of trying to bring them back to the Liiga but things are looking grim as they only play in a 1,700-capacity training arena and are losing to 2nd tier teams, unlike Dinamo Riga who left with them and went to the Latvian 1st league and (not sure) has gone to a playoff final.

Lol as a Fin in south Jersey alway thought it was weird that there was such an old Finnish population outside of Philadelphia too. Finns were the outcasts of Sweden, so as a kid it made sense. It wasn’t until I went to school in Finland and it look like my hometown it made sense. Great video. It’s nice seeing those places online.

Are you familiar with a prominent moto cross motor cycle racer named Ular Rassmann, he's not German, because I definitely saw Scandinavian words to report his exploits. I believe he could be Finnish or Estonian, what is your take on this? I researched the name, my grandmother's maiden name actually, and it shows a small group of Rassmanns in Finland and Estonia. The name is primarily German, if you could reply to me on this I would appreciate it, thanks. I'm from New Jersey as well.

I am a Forest Finn - a descendant of Finns who migrated in the same period as the people you talk about in this video, but settled in Sweden and eastern Norway instead of going to America. Eric Pålsson Mullica, whom you mention, is a cousin (first cousin once removed, to be precise) of my own direct ancestor, Staffan Pålsson Mulikka who settled in Norway near the border with Sweden :) The Forest Finns are legally recognised as a so-called national minority here in Norway, and a lot of us are descendants of the Mulikka family.

Interesting but back in 1638 what is now Finland was a part of Sweden and had been for hundreds of years, it was taken from Sweden by the Russians in 1809 and didn't become the nation of Finland until after WWI

Have you come across a Finnish band called Sleepy Sleepers and their album cover "Born In The S.A.V.O." (1985)? In the late 80s the core members of the band formed a band called Leningrad Cowboys. Film director Aki Kaurismäki directed their first music video, which resulted in the short film "Rocky VI" (1986). After two further short films, "Thru the Wire" (1987) and "L.A. Woman" (1988), Kaurismäki decided to direct a feature film about them, "Leningrad Cowboys Go America" (1989). Sequel was titled "Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses" (1994). In 1993 the band performed with the Red Army Choir in "Total Balalaika Show" in Helsinki Senate Square. As a Finnish-American, who grew up in Finland, living for decades in lsrael, l am fascinated by Finnish history, mythology, sociology, geography and culture. As a proud American, the history of New Sweden especially fascinates me. Too bad this video was not longer!

I found out through some genealogy research that Erik Mullica is my 10th great grandfather. Peter Gunarsson Rambo, a founder of New Sweden, is also my 10th great grandfather. Pretty interesting stuff.
