Cool,,I just found a quad,,should I repair the front mesh or leave it as is,,,,or ,,can it be taken off
@ptwamps3682Ай бұрын
@@neil2550 The Quad cloth could be safely replaced as those amps don't have huge collectble value as with some of the older 50s/ 60s Fenders. Any good amp supplier (Mojotone, Amplified Parts, Next-gen, etc) can supply you with a piece of cloth and you can DIY with a staple gun and a bit of patience.

@ptwamps3682Ай бұрын
I did not mean to imply your amp is worthless. What I meant was, the later Silverface/ particle board Fenders don't have the same high appreciation value as older pre-CBS Fenders. You can safely refurbish a 70s silverface (although keep all original parts) without seriously affecting collectibility among those in the market for "museum pieces." @neil2550 @@neil2550

hi..enjoyed your video...can you recommend the best way to clean tweed covering? - Thank you - :)
@ptwamps3682Ай бұрын
@@MRROBBIEWATTS If it's a 50s original amp, be wary of cleaning the tweed beyond simple dusting as the cloth becomes brittle and can fray. If the amp is more run of the mill, just brush it with a damp (not soaked) cotton cloth. Any vigorous scrubbing will scuff the tweed... and if there are deep old stains you may never get it clean. On an amp not of collectible value, having it retweeded is an option... but be sure to get a quote from the builder as it's a time consuming process (mainly, getting rid of the old tweed and prepping the wood), so it might not be worth it on an amp of lesser value.

let's talk about the older fender amps that use a metal mesh instead of the sheetmetal.
@ptwamps3682Ай бұрын
The same technique basically applies to old Fenders with mesh inside. The mesh warps and the staples can loosen, making it the same sort of pain to get the chassis in and out.

I've got a 6V6 YBA-2B in the tall skinny case. Original except for the filter cap, tubes, an extra handle, and a missing that H-panel on the back with the data tag. It's a rare beast, sounds fantastic, I bought it for $300 back in 2003. I need to sell it. Do you have any idea what i should be asking for it today?

Perfect cut! Which contact cement are you using to attach the tweed/tolex to the wood?
@ptwamps36827 ай бұрын
Thanks. I use a product called Lepage Low-Odor Contact Cement. I believe it is only in Canada, but it is a white latex contact glue... a fairly generic product. Avoid regular contact glue -- the toxic stuff -- because it melts some types of tolex.

THIS is the PROPER technique (i.e., the way Fender has always done it) for finishing off the corners on a tweed amp. You'll see several YT videos by guys (who should know better) doing it the improper way - which is cutting the fabric at a 45-degree angle, resulting in a tacky corner that looks just like a wrapped present. Not good! For further reference as an example of the correct way, just pay particular attention to the corners of any new Fender tweed amp. Fender figured out from the get-go how to do this to achieve a very elegant, neat, finished-off look. This is the more difficult way to do it (because you're cutting right along the narrow curved-over transition between two opposing 90-degree surfaces), and that's why most guys "cheat" and just fold over the fabric like you would on a Christmas present wrapping. You NEVER want to be gigging with one of these things (esp. with their lack of corner protectors) in anything but a very controlled environment, and that's why they fell out of favor. But they are truly a work of art when done right.

You've done a bang-up 'Frankenstein' job on this amp. But, unlike the good doctor, what you made is actually more beautiful! 😂 I seem to be obsessed with this device, because it both is, and is not, a modeling amp (the 'little brother' to this amp, the Frontman 20g, can make every sound this one does, minus the effects.) The way it's flying off the shelves, it seems that Fender really hit onto something.

All so unique and wonderful. A more realistic comparison could have been demonstrated by placing the SM-57 directly on-axis to each speaker at say, a meter distance. That would remove some of the microphones placement variables such as its directionality and proximity effect from the equation. Great video :)

Does the 15 watter hang with a drummer also does it need to have the 2-prong cable changed to 3-prong?
@ptwamps3682 Жыл бұрын
It depends on what type of music, but I gig occasionally with 15 watt amps in small blues clubs with a sensible drummer and it is fine. If you're doing rock with a heavy hitter, you need something more powerful. A 3-prong cord is always a good idea for safety.

pine amps are overrated if you ask me they just don't have that warm pleasing-to-the-ear tube sound like a fender champ but old traynor and garnet amps are fantastic and I once had an old "Lero" brand, Canadian-made amp it was tall and big enough to be a 2X12 but it had like 1x8 speaker LOL but it had that warm tube sound all day long

Back in high school (1973), I had the '65 M15A with two 12" Jensen's in it, absolutely fabulous amplifiers. I bought it, a 1967 Baldwin "Baby Bison" guitar and a lap steel guitar (from the 50's), for $400.00. Being a stupid 17 yr. old, at the time... I didn't realize what I had... traded it for a 72 Fender Bandmaster a year after I got it. i would love to find another one.

Isn't this more of a speaker comparison than anything else? The only fair comparison would be to run them all into the same speaker setup.
@ptwamps36822 жыл бұрын
No, because each amplifier is a different design, and the cabinet and speaker type and size are both part of that design. Doing it your way would be comparing different amp circuits, not different amplifiers.
@totallyunmemorable2 жыл бұрын
@@ptwamps3682 Yes, but . . . . If these were my amps the first thing I'd do is plug them up to a decent speaker, so I could judge what the amps sounds like apart from a speaker that was not considered as part of the design of the amp. They just used whatever they could readily and cheaply get their hands on. I'd be willing to bet that viewers preferences would change if these were all plugged up to the same quality speaker setup. I see the value in what you present. It doesn't serve my needs, but everybody is different.
@solitaire5142 Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. All amplifiers will respond differently to a specific set of Thiele/ Small speaker parameters of a particular driver.
