So glad I found your video you were saying car generator is that the same as an inverter? Cause I want to upgrade my alternator then add a 3000 watt inverter to charge a Ecoflow delta pro with two expansion batteries for van life. The eco flow alternator outputs 800 watts and gets kinda warm but my thinking was I could be set up more effectively and lower cost with a larger alternator a 3000 watt inverter charging all three units cause it’s really hard to cram more than 800 watts of solar on a van roof. Thank you so much gonna sub to see what other useful info I can get.

CarGenerator is an easy to use pure sine inverter with matching cables in a patented weatherproof housing that anyone can use with no prior technical knowledge. check and see what is the largest capacity alternator you can put in your vehicle, and look for "idle output". Often thats around half of full rated amps output. You can adjust the Ecoflow to match the charge rate that your alternator and inverter can safely support. If you search for your vehicle make/model and the words alternator upgrade, that will help you find manufacturers with direct bolt in replacement alternators.

Should there be a fuse between the battery and the inverter?
@cargeneratorАй бұрын
CarGenerator has multiple levels of protection, inside the CarGenerator unit there is high amperage DC fuses for disaster protection (reverse polarity etc) and there is also built in overload protection that shuts down the unit if the AC draw is too high. On our "quick connect" models with a detachable anderson style plug, we include a high amperage DC fuse also.

Curious how this differs from running the RV using a battery isolator?
@cargeneratorАй бұрын
if you have a motorhome that is all one unit, and you have a battery isolator with proper charging circuitry, that should charge your house batteries. If you use a DC clamp amp meter, you could also measure exactly how much and how fast. IF you have a tow behind RV like in this video, then the CarGenerator is a good solution to charge at full speed using the factory equipped built in RV charging system. Charging through the 7 way connector on a tow behind trailer like in the video, transfers very little power, typically only about 60 watts. Bonus of CarGenerator is that all of the outlets in the RV are energized so you can watch TV, charge laptops etc.

I have a self contained conversion (box truck) 2 truck batteries with Victron argo isolator with the 2 output ran to my house batteries and a victron multi. I don't see any voltage/current input to the house batteries when the truck is running - however my draw (fridge etc) could be more than the isolator is providing... Was curious if the car generator could be useful when I'm boondocking in addition to the isolator or if I need to check/change the isolator - thanks!
@cargeneratorАй бұрын
@@nickk3765 would definitely start with checking the charge isolator, and also call victron support to walk through this, you have several pieces to that system. at a most basic level, run your house batteries down to 50%, and then start your engine and use a DC amp clamp meter to check if current is charging back into the batteries with the engine running and then call Victron for support if its not working right.

A car alternator's power output depends on the alternator's rating and the power demand. A conventional alternator can produce 500-600 watts, but modern alternators can produce up to 2500 watts. The alternator's output can range from 40-120 amps, and high-amp alternators can produce up to 300 amps. The alternator's input is also dependent on speed.

1600 watts sounds like a lot for a stock alternator? can they really push that much especially at idle where the RPM's are lower, without draining the starter battery?
@cargenerator2 ай бұрын
To calculate amps available for any specific vehicle, the most accurate way is to call your vehicle dealer , parts dept, give them your phone number or VIN vehicle ID, they can tell you exactly for your vehicle build, the rated amps of your alternator. Reduce this number by half due to idle speed = approximate watts available. THE most important number to watch however, is the vehicle voltage (displayed on the front of the CarGenerator) as long as this is 13.5 volts or higher, than your alternator is easily supplying all the needed power. If this voltage drops to 13.3 or 12.9 volts or lower for example, then you are borrowing power from your battery and need to reduce the load. The EcoFlow DeltaPro lets you adjust input watts so you can adjust it to the capacity of your specific vehicle. Another pro tip for peace of mind is to use a laser temp guage and check the temperature of your alternator occasionally to be completely comfortable that its within normal operating temperature range.

thanks for the comment. voltage under tested load is about 13.7 range. Our instructions for all CarGenerator customers, is to monitor the built in waterproof voltmeter on the front of CarGenerator, which shows the vehicle system voltage, and make sure it generally stays above 13.5 volts, which shows we are not pulling too much power out. if it dips down to 13.1 or 12 volts for example, then you are pulling power from the battery and need to reduce loads.

How long can you safely run a modern vehicle idle?
@cargenerator6 ай бұрын
Thats a fairly broad question, here are some references to provide guidance. Ford ProPower in the F150 pickup truck with built in 2kw inverter is 85 hours published and marketed by Ford. Honda Ridgeline offers a 400w power outlet in the truck bed with Honda markets "for tailgating and watching TV". GM offers a truck bed 400w power outlet which GM owner instructions state "can be used for things like slowcooker or crock pot". Toyota Highlander or Sienna offer a built in 1500w inverter and many other manufacturers are building in power inverters which provide power at idle. Check with your manufacturer and dealer - and if they give you a rubber stamp answer of "avoid idling" then ask to define precisely what is too long? 2 minutes? 20 minutes? 2 hours waiting for the kids at soccer? 4 hours hosting a tailgate party with the truck bed outlet? 10 hours stuck in a major traffic incident? Modern engines are engineered to operate in a wide variety of conditions both at idle and in motion. Thanks.

The most prominent display on the front of CarGenerator is a big bright easy to read DC voltmeter which continuously shows the vehicle DC voltage level. If this is above 13.5 volts then your alternator is providing all of the power, if it drops down to say 12 volts then you know you are drawing too much power and need to reduce loads. This is intentional because for short periods its ok to demand more power but for continuous operation of a load it needs to remain in th 13.3 - 13.5 volt range or higher.

First question for people who worry about idling. Define how long is idling too long? 2 minutes? 20 minutes? 2 hours waiting for the kids at soccer? 4 hours hosting a tailgate party? 10 hours? 24 hours? Idling is simply a fact of life. Millions of vehicles around the world idle every day. Hookup an OBD scanner to your own vehicle and see your engine idle hours, and watch the idle hour timer increase even when you’re sitting at a stoplight. Taxis, delivery vehicles, funeral vehicles, etc…. all idle every day around the world. Honda Ridgeline for example has a 400 watt power outlet in the truck bed which Honda markets “for tailgating and watching TV”, which requires the engine idling. So how long would you idle watching TV? GM offers a truck bed 400 watt power outlet which the GM instructions state can be used for things like a Slowcooker or Crock pot. How many hours would you idle your engine to run your slow cooker or crock pot? The F150 (non hybrid) with a 2kw Pro Power option is offered by Ford to idle for 85 hours providing 2000 watts. FORD published a guide that defines extended idling and how it impacts the engine (years before they released ProPower). FORD provides the example of a contractor that drives 50 miles and IDLES SIX HOURS per day, for 100 days, that’s 600 hours of idling! It’s a real world example, and is in no way prohibited, but FORD simply outlines that you need to do engine maintenance more frequently. Other manufacturers now include high power inverters, like the Toyota Highlander or Sienna with a 1500 watt built in inverter. In fact if you consider how Hybrid vehicles work there is actually no limit how long you could run the vehicle at idle for as long as gas is in the tank. The gas engine simply kicks in and runs for a period of time whenever the high voltage battery pack calls for it. This cycle could run for an hour or for literally days and the engine knows no difference. Whether we are using 70 DC amps to power headlights cabin fan wipers etc, or pulling that power out as around 900 watts useable AC , the built in DC-DC converter doesn’t know or care, it simply supplies DC power. I’ve lived this in real life, we had a bad ice storm with no power for 3.5 days, we ran our 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid for more than 80 hours. It used around half a tank of gas, and that car is still fully functional and running great as our second car. Special note for DIESEL vehicles, modern diesel vehicles have a DPF filter included and it takes about 12 hours at idle speed to fill up this filter. So we recommend after about 8 hours of idling with a modern diesel, simply disconnect and drive it for 10-15 minutes and the internal systems will regen automatically clean the system and you are good to go.

Is there any way to get more watts than half my 80amp alternator can provide at idle? After halving I only have 480 watts and need more. Does revving increase? Maybe I could leave brick on accelerator if so…

if you google for your vehicle and the phrase "alternator upgrade" you will typically find several companies selling direct fit bolt in high output alternators. for example google for "Dodge Caravan 2019 alternator upgrade" You can consider installing an upgraded alternator and thereby gaining significantly more power. It uses about 5 horsepower per 1000 watts so you engine can easily power it. Feel free to call our experts to discuss further 800-750-4660 thanks.

I have a GL 350 also, the manual says not to idle for more than a few minutes or you can damage the emissions sensors. How are you overcoming that?

David, can you provide the reference to where exactly the Mercedes user manual states this? That would be a very severe restriction to ordinary intended use of the car. Millions of vehicles idle around the world every day, on a very hot day stuck in traffic, or waiting for the kids at soccer or the airport, or on a very cold day in winter stuck in traffic to think you would have to shut off your GL350 while sitting after 2 minutes stuck in a traffic jam, and freeze? www.mbusa.com/content/dam/mb-nafta/us/owners/manuals/2014/operators/MY14_GL_Operator.pdf

@@cargenerator I looked at my manual I didn't see it. Not sure where I read that. I agree with you as far as the cold goes.
