Its not even that. Performance reviews are done by management, and bonuses and raises available are budgeted. This means that our review, and thus our increase in pay, depend on the evaluation of a person who's own bonuses and raises depend on denying us ours. Often explicitly, as "controlling labor costs"

How can I get someone to accept this mindset?
@DavidBurkus14 күн бұрын
As in a member of your team or a leader you work for?
@scottwill147213 күн бұрын
A Leader. The way you expressed my agreeable views of encouragement for people to speak up. Being accountable as to say "oh, I am wrong on this how can we learn?" Instead of denial and deflection. Or even the simplest of acceptance of being wrong and working out a solution? Too much feeling of being attacked instead of lets figure this out is what has been holding certain people back. While others fail to the top.
@DavidBurkus13 күн бұрын
@@scottwill1472 This is a difficult transition for pretty much any leader to make. Often people become leaders because they have all the answers and do better work than others...so when mistakes happen they're prone to hide them and when colleagues disagree with them they defend their original positions. How do you get someone to accept this mindset? Honestly....you can't. If they're not willing to make this mental flip, there's not much someone who works for them can do.

@@DavidBurkus thank you for taking a few minutes to reply. I know that in a general sense, people do not like change. This is a really great informative video and your concept of creating a Manual of Me will help greatly with the dynamics of the medical office that I work in. We have a very busy environment with a wonderful team but conflicts arise occasionally and I think this concept will work very well to help strengthen the team dynamics and to help us figure out how best we can rearrange things to help with the strengths and weaknesses of the team. We do team building exercises about twice a year and this may be the best one I've come across so far. I really think this is brilliant.

i disagree, actually i think imcompotence at all levels, and blame culture is what makes a toxic culture. Companies have to keep secrets, and employees at certain levels have to keep secrets also. Depending on what the company is, it may need to have leadership that can be considered top down. Some companies require standards to be met, but many employees don't want to meet that standard. Some times you don't want employees to innovate. Complaining is an issue.

@drakecarter1780Ай бұрын
@DavidBurkus agreed. I actually dealt with a case of that earlier in my management career. Brand new hire made a false claim against another coworker. The new hire signed, but didn't bother to read, the paperwork stating that all conversations in the workplace are audio recorded. I had the new hire show me the area where the alleged accusation took place. I pulled by the audio and camera feed for that area and nothing she said or described actually happened. The new hire was promptly left go some weeks later.

Culture fit is real, but it's like a highway with multiple lanes as long as you're on the same road going the same direction you can be in a wider path. But values fit is ridiculously close to.culture fit. What you value is your culture. So in an outcomes based culture for.example you may take a different lane but you'll achieve results and not ruin the culture or values or contribution. This video while somewhat interesting is a lot of grey double speak in my opinion. So agree to disagree.
@DavidBurkusАй бұрын
I'd argue that culture is the habits and norms of our behavior...and values lies deeper into our beliefs. Values lead to habits but not in everyone the same way. Two people can both value honest...but one does it by "speaking the truth" even if it hurts and another does it by not speaking at all.

I totally agree, every win, and every loss for that matter is a potential way to celebrate and potential way to get better. I have encountered recently players who can't take feedback well who demand every win to be celebrated. However the emphasis on positive celebration may seem to be an aggressive defensive stance against dealing with real core and potentially toxic team issues. I'm wondering your thoughts on dealing with aggressive toxic positivity for a deflection of core issue
