Do you know any inventors, with products in retailers?
@DavidBurkusКүн бұрын
Solo inventors? No. But I'm friends with a few company founders who've invented a product and built a company around it. Most built their own DTC online retail division to get started.

@DavidBurkus Thanks for the fast response. I had government expertise in mine. What a farce. Politicians are clueless about jobs and invention. They love the taxes and PAC money.
@kylerobinson8336Күн бұрын
I agree with the points however it seems to me that this only applies if you’re actually receiving at least a fair market value as a compensation. I always say money is a prerequisite of a high performing job that requires that effort. If the money is not there then the atta boys and recognition feels disingenuous. As far as keeping me along the path and motivated I agree especially with development from my manager or parter
@DavidBurkusКүн бұрын
For sure. You're not going to get high-performance out of people you're dramatically underpaying. But once they're making enough to take the issue off the table...its often counterproductive to bring it back on the table in the form of incentive compensations.

I really need a job. There is a well paying special education job with a good sign on bonus. (I need that bonus as I'm over drawn at the bank!). The hitch is it is with severely disabled kids. These jobs tend to be routine and boring. Nothing academic to speak of. Because of my neurodivergence, (ADHD) jobs in general are difficult for me. I'll take your advice ahead of time, and see what is interesting about handwashing, feeding, using your words. ..... just 4 months.

I hope it helps. I totally get when you've got to take a job to pay the bills but it's not a passion. You may also look at a lot of the research out their on "job crafting" and see if there's any ideas if gives you for connecting with the meaning and service behind the jobs as well. Might help.

Thankfully, I'm past the stage of crafting the perfect CV, but this advice on team culture is spot on - you're a great speaker, by the way! I've been on both sides of the hiring process, and it's a mess. I was once grilled about some obscure edge case in an interview that even the interviewer probably had to look up beforehand. It's like they're testing your ability to memorize trivia, not your actual skills. It's gotten so bad that I actually started using this AI tool during interviews. It listens in and gives you answers in real-time. It felt a bit like cheating, but honestly, it just helped me get past those ridiculous trivia questions and focus on showcasing my actual experience. It's a shame that it has to come to this, though. We need to focus on evaluating a candidate's real-world abilities, not their ability to recall random facts.

Oh my gosh, you're so right! The interview process these days is insane. Using an AI tool to help with those crazy trivia questions sounds like a smart move. It's all about leveling the playing field, right? We need to focus on what really matters in a candidate.

Very important principle here - focus on the result not the task. We all have a tendency to look down at whatever we're working on and think that thing is the solution - it's not! The result for a human being is the only thing that matters. Learn to tie your team or individual's work to the result you create and you'll drive better work from everyone invovled.

Ideally, the company pays when meals are involved. But obviously that'd dependent on what your company does. There's no harm in floating the idea of an after work happy hour where everyone covers their own....just don't make it mandatory.

I really enjoy your channel - it's one of the best, in my opinion, dedicated to traditional leadership and management, grounded in values and evidence-based practices. If we look at the roles you mentioned from the perspective of more progressive organizational models, we see that not only are "leadership" and "management" simply sets of competencies, but they’re actually collections of diverse and varied skills. These don’t need to be concentrated in a single individual; instead, they can be distributed across a team or a collaborative network. Just as a manager isn’t a single role but a bundle of several - perhaps even 10 - distinct roles, these responsibilities don’t have to rest with one person and can be shared within a team in various configurations. We can also view leadership not merely as a role but as a distributed process within a team, where different individuals take the lead depending on the context and situation-for example, based on their contextual experience and expertise rather than their formal position. When we approach leadership and management from this distributed, atomized, collective perspective, the false dichotomy between the two becomes strikingly clear.

Great thoughts and another reason it's such a false dichotomy. I honestly wanted to skip making this video but I felt like I had to address it.

Behavioral interview questions can help a lot. Ask them about how they handled specific, difficult situations that are similar to what they'll handle in this job. And then listen for how much they took control of the situation versus complained about it.

Its not even that. Performance reviews are done by management, and bonuses and raises available are budgeted. This means that our review, and thus our increase in pay, depend on the evaluation of a person who's own bonuses and raises depend on denying us ours. Often explicitly, as "controlling labor costs"

How can I get someone to accept this mindset?
@DavidBurkusАй бұрын
As in a member of your team or a leader you work for?
@scottwill1472Ай бұрын
A Leader. The way you expressed my agreeable views of encouragement for people to speak up. Being accountable as to say "oh, I am wrong on this how can we learn?" Instead of denial and deflection. Or even the simplest of acceptance of being wrong and working out a solution? Too much feeling of being attacked instead of lets figure this out is what has been holding certain people back. While others fail to the top.
@DavidBurkusАй бұрын
@@scottwill1472 This is a difficult transition for pretty much any leader to make. Often people become leaders because they have all the answers and do better work than others...so when mistakes happen they're prone to hide them and when colleagues disagree with them they defend their original positions. How do you get someone to accept this mindset? Honestly....you can't. If they're not willing to make this mental flip, there's not much someone who works for them can do.
