This is so cool! I want to play the Greek lyre, and I’m asking for one for Christmas because I have no crafting talent (it’s okay, it’s for Apollo, not Hephaestus). The one you made is so beautiful!

I love that movie! LOVE the ending! I just love that you copied her dress. Looks amazing! PS: I found your channel from Under a Tin Roof. I want to improve my sewing skills so I can make some period dresses but I am finding myself a bit lazy and shopping on Amazon instead.

Many pictures of lyres are from the 19th century. They are more a decorative thing, not a source for an actual instrument. The historical lyres often were much bigger (may be exept the Cologne Lyre) I have build some different lyres, and yes, longer strings and a second hole (for a soundbox) will improve the sound dramatically. If you plan to build a second one, I can give you a few hints. Some would make the build much easier.

I'm not a luthier by any means, but being a strings player, I've done a little reading into what makes my instrument "do the thing".... and tone-wood. Certain woods vibrate better hence producing better sound than others. For strings, spruce (or cedar for more economical instruments) is ideal. The sides and backs are usually done with hardwoods (maple, mahogany, and similar tend to be the more popular choices, so the softer side of hardwoods)

Sadly he is unable to do projects like this at the moment because he suffered from a Stroke caused by an aneurism.. I am hoping he will recover enough to someday get back to building musical instruments like this again.. I am sharing this with him to lift his spirits..

I had a lot of fun watching this. Thanks for sharing your sewing journey. I ignore the accuracy police/gatekeepers and just have fun with my clothes. I love to mix period with contemporary pieces. As I am very poor and living on disability,I go for a capsule wardrobe that covers business professional to casual Goth/Punk. Mostly it's done with accessories to dress it up or down. Sewing my own clothes gives me the maximum control over quality. Once in a while I find a high end dreamy fabric on clearance at the mill end store for $15 or less a yard, regular price was $60+. I am currently working on a stripe blouse from $1.50 a yard Walmart quilting cotton. Thrift stores in my town rarely have anything worth buying. My kids bought me ponte knit, stretch twill, rayon jersey and various cotton fabrics to sew a new wardrobe as I put on weight. Listening to you and especially your comments on classicism and other things was the first time in a long time someone sounded like me.

So on Instagram i saw someone called Noodle make a chemise a la Reine out of thin wool. Would this super fine wool actually be warmer than the cotton? Full disclosure: i am writing a time travel novel and i am wondering if women just wore these garments: given how easy they are to sew in comparison to the italian gown or the Robe á la Piemontaise? So if my time traveller made herself a chemise a la Reine in wool would she bring scandal upon herself? Be attacked like a girl in a miniskirt on a subway?
@thistle_thistle4 ай бұрын
@@Noblebird02 I don't think this style was very common in wool, even thin fine wool!. The whole idea of the chemise a la reine was that it was made out of thin cotton (which is very much not traditional court gown French made silk, and was imported at the time), some people really criticize Marie Antoinette for popularizing this garment because it sparked a demand for American grown cotton which in turn fueled the fires of the burgeoning American slave trade. I also think because of the structure of this garment it would be difficult to make in wool, because the idea is that it's light and flowy like undergarments (another reason this was scandalous) However, it could totally be worn with wool petticoats or wool mitts for warmth! As for the time period, they are relatively easy to pattern and sew, but require yards and yards of imported fabric and would be expensive! If your character is trying to blend in at court in the later 1700s I don't think she would be wearing one of these in wool!
@Noblebird024 ай бұрын
@@thistle_thistle she isn't going to court: she is a medical doctor. The reason the chemise a la Reine is so popular amongst costuming community is that it is easier to sew than say a Piemontaise, more comfortable than an English gown, cheaper for a modern person than a robe volante. I guess my character needs to wear the 17th century equivalent of scrubs+ travel outfit+ outfit to watch Gluck operas or Mozart etc

I only knew of American Girl through this secondhand book that my aunt gave to me as a child, that I reread over the many summers I spent at her house. It's more of a storybook than a crafts book, but I can't for the life of me remember the story. I only recently found out that she's actually a doll. I find it so interesting that she (and the other dolls) have cookbooks and official sewing patterns. This video is making me want to foray into doll collecting, haha.

As someone who is getting back into American Girls, I had no expectations coming into this video, but honestly I am shocked how well done this video you made is. The snow, the camera shots, everything about it is beautiful. If I could tell someone my favorite kind of content, it would be this kind for sure! I also want to add how calming your spirit is.
