Silent Partner is a death wish. There is too much to gum up or fail internally -- from cold weather, ice, grit, dried grease, etc. Go get a used Soloist if you can find one. If not that, then get an El Mudo or modified Grigri.

Have you checked the function of the Goblin on a sub 10mm rope? Say a 9.5 dynamic? Rating looks to be 10mm-11mm

I don't use the the Goblin for rope soloing. I had the device slip to the knot while testing. I'm pretty sure that was using a 10mm rope. Luckily I was just testing the device when it failed.

Hello, good route, looks interesting. Just wondering about your setting, do you trust so much to Revo? You don't use back up knots? Also microtraxion? Do you satisfy with Revo mechanism? Just asking because I want to buy Revo for LRS.
@gunkclimber
@gunkclimber 6 ай бұрын
I have tested the revo and it seems to work well. I was pressed for time so I cut a lot of corners on this climb making it unsafe. I do use knots and a rope bag if I'm doing multipitch. A backup device is a good idea and I'm looking into the new petzl device that's like a grigri.

I would encourage backing up the rappel with a third hand of some sort. Not only does it add safety, but can be a handy tool. For example, you could have pulled up some rope and setup an autoblock before disconnecting the Revo. Then you wont have to reach out for the rope to attach your ATC, the rope is already at your belay loop. This also secures the rope from sliding though the anchor. Not really an issue where you were, but wouldn't hurt. Another comment mentioned using a PAS. Some PAS can also be used as a rappel extension (google "Alpine Savvy extended rappel, explained") which means your auto block can connect to your belay loop. The PAS doubling as the rappel extension saves time. The picture on the Alpine Savvy article shows the setup nicely. With practice, I think using a PAS, extending the rappel, and using an autoblock backup could be done quite quickly and make everything much safer. Please note, I am not an expert. I am just sharing my thoughts. Thank you for the video.
@gunkclimber

I've only Lead rope soloed a couple of times with a grigri and a micro-trax cache loop So I am no expert by any means. I used backup knots as a fail safe to keep me off the deck. I assume you use the clove hitch at the halfway point to keep the rope from sliding down and adding slack. If you fell above that piece before your next one, you would have had a factor two fall onto it. I'm pretty sure there are better ways to accomplish the same objective. Also, if you're going to use a clove hitch, I would cinch it down so it doesn't move around on the biner and possibly open it. Anyway, it's easy to be a critic, but I really enjoyed your video. Thanks.
@gunkclimber
@gunkclimber 7 ай бұрын
Grigri are rough to rope solo. Revos feed easily. A backup device would be a wise. I usually use knots and a rope bag but like I said I cut a lot of corners and made this really dangerous. Though the hitches were munter hitch and not a clove hitch. Slips a little but safer ways do exist.

My first lead climb in the Gunks. No guidebook, 4 or 5 steel carabiners from the Army surplus store. 120 feet of Goldline. Some early Chouinard stopper on Perlon cord. Just went up and found a fixed pin and yelled down, "someone has been up here before!" Didn't tie into the belay. All poor hip belays. We had carabiner break bars for rappelling. Rapped down from the top because we didn't know we could walk off. I was first and the doubled rope was too short to get back to the ledge. I actually jumped down 6 feet to the ledge. My partner stopped at a crappy tree partway down and set up another rappel. Could have been so dead.
