Plenty of places in the world still have leasehold and especially for flats it’s the way it’s being abused that’s the problem. Many historical leases are at a peppercorn rent, it’s mostly the last 30 or so years or so that this has become a problem and recently come to light.

Ground rents are going up by ridiculous amounts. And leaseholders can't sell on their properties when they go above £250. This man doesn't know enough about what people are experiencing.

For a 4 bed they pay a painter £ 900..of corse the contractor don t give a f about your home sometimes the painter was a car washer a day before i know cases...u are in big shit...the materials in the homes are as bad as 90% of the contractors...and paying a contractor a little bit more then a labour is not helping

im selling my house and looking to downsize. flats/apartments are a huge ripoff. buy a house then pay for it again over 20 years with lease. wtf. much cheaper to buy an actual house instead.

Leasehold is a nightmare. Leasehold properties should be removed from the properties built figures as leaseholders dont and will never own their home. Its a total rip off and undermines society.

it must be nice to be able to make jokes about this, personally i've been trapped in my flat for ten years, like an open prison. the answer is that politicians can't be trusted, gove trying to change a law to be fair seemed incredible to me and it appears both parties are just using this to get elected and in the end it will be "too expensive to put into practice". one thing for sure the tories will NEVER get my vote.

The bank DO NOT transfer money from a special account into your account. THis is a common misunderstanding. The bank also DO NOT offer up anything of value as their part of the contract, which is usual in contract law. Ipso facto, the bank has no risk whatsoever and has nothing to lose. Then they also charge you to replay the money that came out of fresh air, at interest, for decades with a final total many times greater than the original loan, in addition to initial fees for the privilege of applying not to mention the bank owning your house for years. The entire mortgage and banking system is based on fraud and is a giant Ponzi scheme. Look it up.

Luckily our conveyancer spotted the ground rent increases in line with RPI. It was at £248 per year, so would've pushed us over the £250 per year mark (outside of London). We managed to get the ground rent capped at £250 per year. My advice to anyone buying a leasehold property is query the ground rent with your solicitor/conveyancer. The amount payable is critical when it comes to re-selling the property as lenders may not lend on properties where a ground rent exceeds £250 per year, due to the risk of eviction. Pay for the deed of variation and save the stress further down the line!

If necessary you could just walk out and leave everything behind, maybe not financially for the best but a choice. Never heard the expression never assume anything ? Did your lawyer tell you about the management fees ? If not, negligence. Is it the same as a service charge? Which is uncapped and affects millions of people. Same as leasehold land which.... Or endowment mortgage which.....

It's even more laughable for me as I pay maintainence for management of land around my estate which is actually private land owned by the council. I pay council tax too, so I am effectively paying my council twice to mow the grass.

So if Labour win they can revise it and put the ground rent removal back in the bill.
