Hi Darrell. I have the 2024 RAV4 prime and seem to have an issue with the fuel tank capacity level. In the manual, it states that the Prime has a 14.5 gallon fuel tank. It also states that when the low fuel light comes on, there is 2.2 gallons left in the tank. Now if there is only 2.2 gallons left when the low fuel light comes on and it's a 14.5 gallon tank, then I should be able to fill up with 12.3 gallons. Right?? I'm barely getting 8-10 gallons every time i fill up.

@GoldenK9Campers 14 сағат бұрын
They seriously under estimate the amount of fuel left in the tank. I guess they dont' want you to run out of gas.

Another factor that you didn't mention, that will radically affect the EV/PHEV landscape is solid-state batteries. For readers unfamiliar with what a "solid state" battery is, it still stores energy by way of lithium-ion transfer between the anode and cathode in a battery cell, wherein the two halves of the cell are separated by a semi-permeable membrane that allows litium ions to cross the membrane, while electrons flow in the outer circuit to power the vehicle: the difference is that the electrolyte in these cells is a solid, instead of a semi-liquid gel. Compared to gel-electrolyte lithium ion batteries, Solid State cells are less prone to dendrite growth, the electrolyte itself is more stable and suffers chemical degradation at a slower rate, and the energy density (kilowatt-hours per unit of weight of the cell), is up to 80% higher. The slower degradation means that the battery in a typical EV, or PHEV like the Rav4 Primes that Darrell and I own, that might last 150,000 miles, should last to 280,000 miles before it degrades to below 75% of it's original capacity. The EV range of my Rav4 Prime, which is about 58 miles on surface streets (25 to 40 mph speed range), could be up to 90 miles using a solid state battery of the same physical dimensions and weight. The BZ4X, or a Tesla Model Y, with 240 miles range, could see that range jump to 450 miles with a solid state battery of the same size and weight. These batteries are already powering a few small devices like cell phones, more or less in an experimental way to see how reliable they are and to prove the technology, but there's every indication that solid state cells can be scaled up to the same size and form factor that many EV's (including Toyota) are using. The Rav4 Prime currently uses a rectangular 4.2 volt cell that holds about 45 amp-hours, and there are 96 of these connected in series, to make the 18.2 kW-hour, 390 volt battery pack. A solid state cell of the same physical dimensions could hold maybe 100 amp-hour capacity, of which 80 amp hours would be "useable". If the battery manufacturers can mass produce these cells and provide them to auto makers at the same, or possibly even lower, price to car makers, the perceived value of EV and PHEV cars will radically improve in the minds of consumers who have been sitting on the fence. Imagine a BZ4X that can go 480 miles on $20 worth of home-charge electricity. A Rav4 Hybrid would burn about $55 worth of gasoline at the current $3.80/gallon price to go that same 480 miles. If you avoid frequent DC fast charging (which is harmful to all batteries), and stick to 20 amp Level 2 charging at home, that BZ4X should give you 20 years of reliable service before the battery would be worn out. A Previa with a range-extender ICE is an interesting idea, but don't forget that before it could be sold here, that engine would have to meet US-EPA regulations on tailpipe emmissions. The A25A-FXS engine is already certified and is being used in the Rav4 Hybrid/Prime, and the Camry, Highlander, and Sienna, and that's a strong reason for Toyota to stick with the current powertrain (A25-FXS with P-710 or P-810 transaxle).

Did it in MA and it worked well. Saved me at least $4,500 vs going with purchase option. Since we have vehicle taxes here in MA it is not as advantageous as some other states as you don't get a 'credit' on sales taxes when trading in a vehicle going with the immediate lease buyout. I would mention that some people have said you can 'pay down' lease up front taking money off the total capitalized cost of the lease and thereby reducing your tax liability when you buy it out. While you may be able to do that, it is highly risky before you actually own the vehicle as you could theoretically lose a portion or all of the down payment money if the car gets totaled as you don't own the car, the dealer does. So when you put money down to reduce the capitalized cost, you are basically paying down THE DEALER'S vehicle, not yours! One possible thing to be aware of. Similarly any other downpayment you pay on a lease would not be returned to you if you total the car. Also, you would not be able to make a down payment that exceeds the total value of the lease anyways, which is typically about 35-45% of the value of the MSRP of vehicle for a 36 month lease.

Driving the rav4 prime with 0 EV miles is not good for the battery it shortens the life span and regenerating EV miles at that low of level is very hard because the battery is not stable and at 0 EV miles on the battery makes the gas engine work harder and it drops your MPG if you gonna use the EV only feature dont let the range drop below 5 to 10 miles you want extra power stored in the battery and plus the battery is much more stable and prolongs the life of the battery and you should only charge your battery 100% if you gonna use the EV feature as soon as it is done charging because a fully charge battery shortens the life span of the battery and makes it unstable thats when you where driving the prime in HV it went down to 80% it is safer and healthier for the battery and the prime uses more of power till it gets to 80% as a safety feature to protect the battery I enjoy the video BTW good to see the prime can handle going up hill with that weight with little problem thanks a bunch

I own a 2024 Rav4 Prime and am glad to hear no issues after 3 years and no battery degradation! Also impressed by the frequent tows. Haven't tried towing a trailer yet but have a hitch (need wiring harness). I was able to use the $6,500 (current lease rebate) to my advantage, buying the car immediately out of the lease and saving $10,000 total off MSRP early in 2024. I often use the hybrid mode on the highway around here just to have the extra power and use the full capacity of the car and am still averaging 88 miles per gallon even in colder weather here in Massachusetts. Overall averaging 65 mpgs with a TON of hybrid highway miles. Pretty amazing. Also have solar power so a plug in of any sort is a no brainer as we have a surplus of energy from our panels.

The funny thing is, the current "regular hybrid" setup in the tacoma and the land cruiser (2.4L turbo I4 with electric motor) actually is already equivalent in terms of horsepower and torque to the 4xe PHEV on the Wrangler/Grand Cherokee and potentially the Gladiator (2.0 turbo I4 in those three). If Toyota produce Tacoma PHEV it would easily blow them out of the water in power for sure. Perhaps around 400hp and well over 500 lb-ft torque. I just hope that when they do come out with PHEV Tacoma, that they do what Ford did with Ranger PHEV overseas and beef up the suspension so that payload/towing capability is the same as gasoline or regular hybrid models

I like the early indicators on this new design. Made the realization that I like the ‘soccer-mom’ styling of the fourth gen. I think this will more or less be a slightly ruggedized version of the Crown Signia which so far looks like a winner. It will go along with a more sophisticated interior as well. The truck interiors tend to be more plasticy.

It makes sense to produce a Tacoma PHEV: the Tacoma is already a hugely popular truck. The only thing that would worry me is cooling capacity for the electric motor(s). I often see people towing trailers with vehicles that are too small for the size of the trailer, like towing a 28 foot travel trailer that weighs 7,000 pounds with a 1/2 ton pickup. A trailer that long and heavy needs a 3/4 ton pickup, and it's not just because of the powertrain: in a 3/4 ton or 1-ton pickup, the brakes have more capacity, the frame is make of thicker, stronger steel, the driveshaft is larger so it can handle more torque, etc. Out at Folsom Lake, where I have my sailboat, I often see people towing boats with Tacomas that are way too large. The Tacoma is a capable 1/4-ton class pickup, but it isn't an F-250 Super Duty, or even a Tundra, and I cringe every time I see people abusing Tacomas by towing trailers that are way too big for a 1/4-ton pickup. This problem of owners overestimating the safe towing limits of 1/4 ton and 1/2 ton pickups is only going to get worse with Hybrid and PHEV trucks. Last winter, I took a trip to Death Valley in my Rav4 Prime. No trailer, but about 800 pounds of payload, between my own body weight and all the camping gear I had loaded. Climbing the west side of Towne Pass out of Panamint Valley on CA-190, I saw the traction battery temperature and transaxle oil temperatures rise alarmingly fast - in just 3 miles on that 9% upgrade, the battery temp rose from 75°F to 117°F, and I was taking it easy as to the speed, just 35 mph. The transaxle oil temp shot from 120°F to 210°F, and as you no doubt know, the only thing in that P-810 transaxle that could generate that much heat is the MG2 stator, which is cooled by the transmission oil. I put the car back in HV mode and didn't try any more hill climbs in EV mode, but I am left to wonder, if I hadn't been running my Car Scanner OBD-II app, and monitoring the powertrain temps, how much hotter might the battery and transmission have gotten before the engine control computer signaled a Check Engine warning light on the instrument panel? Or the battery suffer permanent damage? I've driven this Rav4 Prime 17,000 miles, and I've never seen the battery get hotter than 105°F under normal driving conditions, even last July on a visit to Las Vegas, when the air temp was 115°F. When I first got in the car, the battery temp was 115°F, because the car had been sitting in a baking hot asphalt parking lot at my friend's apartment for a couple of days, but as soon as I started driving home, it dropped to 99°F as I ran the a/c, and stayed there the rest of the trip home. The normal transaxle oil temp when running in EV mode is only about 120°F. Anyway, can you see why I have some concern about a PHEV Tacoma? It probably won't use the P-810 transaxle, but the electric motor(s) will almost certainly be of a 3-phase synchronus design with permanent magnet rotors, since that's a proven technology, and Toyota's been developing them continuously since the first generation in the 1997 Prius. In a pickup truck, built to haul heavy cargo and tow trailers, can they provide adequate cooling for the stator coils and inverters in a Tacoma-sized vehicle? I guess we will find out. I just wish they would come out with a PHEV Sienna.

Great info. Whas software are you using to grab all that info from your OBD port?
@laura-ann.0726
@laura-ann.0726 17 күн бұрын
@@GoldenK9Campers - Hi Darrell - You need two items: (1) a Bluetooth OBD-II transmitter. Reliable ones cost in the $35~$50 range. I use a VeePeak branded one fropm Amazon, cost me $37. These are a little plastic dongle that plugs into the OBD-II diagnostic port on just about any car or light truck sold in the US after 1996. All it does is transmit the data stream from the vehicle's CANBUS as a BlueTooth radio signal to your cell phone or tablet. What's actually on this data stream depends on the vehicle; there is a set of standardized PID codes common to all cars, then each manufacturer adds PID's specific to certain models; for instance voltage and resistance for each of the 96 cells in a Rav4 Prime or BZ4X battery is on the CANBUS, and you can actually read this data in real time: it's how a Toyota mechanic faced with a battery fault Check Engine code would be able to determine which of the battery cells were bad. There's TONS of data on the CANBUS for the Rav4 Prime, temp sensors for the engine and transmission oil, fuel flow rates, power flow in amps and kilowatts in the traction battery circuit, how much gas is in the tank stated in 1/100's of a gallon, engine RPM, air flow in the intake manifold at the MAFF sensor, Oxygen sensor voltage for the catalytic computer sensors (handy for spotting a O2 sensor that's about to fail), and even the actual torque being applied by the MG2 motor to the powertrain. (2) The other item is an App that you run on your Android or Apple phone or tablet. There are two that are highly rated, Torque Pro, and the one I use, called "Car Scanner". These apps take the raw CANBUS data being transmitted by the OBD-II dongle, run it through a "car profile" filter in the app, and output the data to "gauges" that you define, that are shown on the phone's or tablet's screen. These gauges can be round, with a needle pointer, like most gauges on a car's instrument panel, or they can be simple text readouts that just show the number. I like Car Scanner, because it's enormously configurable: you can define your "dashboard" on the phone's screen to have as few as 2 or 3 huge gauges, up to 30 or more small boxes that show just the value of a sensor as a number. And you can define an unlimited number of dashboards with different sensors for different conditions, that you can scroll through with just a swipe on the screen: I have four different dashboards that I use- (1) Several gauges that show ICE engine related data like RPM, fuel flow, oil and coolant temp, for driving in HV mode. (2) Several gauges specific to the traction battery state of charge, temperature, regen braking stats, and electrical power flow for EV mode driving. (3) A dashboard specific to Level 1 or Level 2 charging, for when I am sitting in the car at a public charging station. (4) a dashboard that combines all of the most important sensor data for both EV and HV mode all on one screen. Either of these apps, Torque Pro and Car Scanner, have a "free" version with some features disabled or limited; the Pro versions cost $5.00 and are are definitely worth it. NOTE: Because the Rav4 Prime is such a new car, the Profile for it in Car Scanner is incomplete, and to be honest, I don't think the developer will ever be able to de-code all of the PID's that exist on the CANBUS for this car. He's located in Rostov, in Russia, so he doesn't have access to actual cars sold in North America, and he has to de-code PID's by trial-and-error from raw CANBUS log files that people email to him, recorded by CarScanner in diagnostic mode from their cars (I've done this, in hopes he can determine the PID's for the MG!, MG2, and MGR stator temps and rotor speeds). Toyota doesn't publish the PID codes openly, so OBD-II app developers have had to suss out the proprietary CANBUSS PID's by a lot of guesswork. Of course, you can read ALL the CANBUS data with Toyota Techstream, but the full version of that software costs $5,800, and you probably have to be an official Toyota technician to even be allowed to acquire a "legal" copy of it.

@@DadMichoMurphy - In the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive transaxles (P-610, P-710, P-810), the transmission oil pump provides pressurized oil to several nozzles that spray this oil over the MG1 and MG2 stators to cool them. There are temperature sensors that read the stator temps, and that would presumably turn on the Check Engine Warning light if an abnormally high stator temp were to occur, but so far, no one that I know of has been able to suss out what the PID codes are for these temp sensors in the Rav4 Hybrid and Rav4 Prime, so that you can read them with the Car Scanner or Torque Pro OBD-II apps. Toyota has not published the PID codes for their cars, probably because they want people to take them to the Dealership for service. The only clue I have been able to find is that Car Scanner does read the Transmission Oil temp sensor, and when climbimg a steep hill in EV mode, this oil heats up very quickly. Since the only thing in the Transaxle that generates heat are the two stator coil assemblies for MG1 and MG2, it's not unreasonable to assume that a rapid rise in the transmission oil temp when placing a heavy load on the car in EV mode, is the result of sustained high temperature in the MG2 stator from running a lot of current through it. I've seen the power flow in my Rav4 Prime hit 150 kilowatts while accelerating hard away from a stop, or climbing a steep hill in EV mode. Normal power flow while cruising on the freeway at 55 mph in EV mode is about 16 kilowatts, and the transmission oil temp will be in the low 120°F range (with outside air temp around 70°F).

@@laura-ann.0726 220 degrees is probably still a safe temperature for the fluid. Assuming it’s Toyota’s standard synthetic. I bet the peak before there is an issue is above 250.

Hi, can you tell me why your wiring harness is different? It’s not the oem 4 pin? What’s the difference? Looking into getting a teardrop or a liner!

Yep.. answered that in your previous post. Had a truck accessory shop install the 4 pni to 7 pin adapter, the extra wiring, making an additional cutouit in the bumper, and installing the 7 pin adapter that also includes a 4 pin.

I also love Toyota PHEV's. I own two Rav4 Primes and they are amazing vehicles. We normally get around 45 miles electric range, so we rarely visit a gas station. Totally problem-free vehicles and no range anxiety at all.

I'm getting 59 miles EV range in my 2023 Rav4 Prime. That's on surface streets in the 25~40mph speed range for running errands around town. At freeway speed, 55 mph, that drops to about 38 miles, so I tend to not use EV mode on the freeway much. But overall, I'm thrilled with the vehicle. The Rav4 Prime is the most versatile vehicle I've ever owned, and almost the most efficient, too - I had a 2019 Prius Prime for 4 years, and that got better fuel economy, but it couldn't haul nearly as much gear, so it was less versatile than a Rav4. Over the 17,000 miles I've driven it, this Rav4 Prime has had an average running cost of 6.7¢/mile, for gas and home electric charging. We live in a city with a not-for-profit municipal electric company, so my cost for charging the car overnight is just 12¢/kilowatt-hour. I'm totally sold on the PHEV as the best type of vehicle out here on the west coast, where the States are big, and road trips tend to be hundreds of miles long, requiring 3 or even 4 stops to charge an EV, assuming you can even find a charging station. I drive in some pretty remote areas, out in the Mojave Desert, or in the Sierra in northern California, and there are no EV's that have the range I would need. With the Rav4 Prime, I have 550 miles range on just the gas in the tank, and if I carry a 6 gallon jerry can of gas, that's another 200 miles of emergency range. No EV can even remotely match the versatility of the Rav4 Prime or Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV for adventuring into remote areas.

I thought I was the only one thinking the Ice Cream truck had a louder jingle than my 2023 RAV 4 XSE Prime horn! Thanks for this great video. I ordered and received Hella 003.399.842 signature red grill horn set. My problem is that the connection plug behind the new horn is totally different from the connection plug on my car's horn. Do I send it back or start splicing wires. My car is really new with 1200 miles on it. I would hate to start butchering the wiring. Could use some advice. Thanks

The horn should be be black.. not signature red. You probably got a universal one vs the Toyota specific horn. I would send it back.

For those people using a jump starter that can't reach both the positive in the fuse box and the negative as shown in this video, you can use a engine compartment grounded bolt for the ground instead. An alternative would be to use a 12 volt battery to connect to the positive and ground, giving the RAV4 enough temporary power to open the hatchback and gain access to the 12 volt battery that way. This way you can gain access directly to the 12 volt battery.
