Been looking for the name of the song❤❤❤ because of how melodic it is when played by @Kenya Defense Forces every 12 December during the trooping of the colors.🎉

This is just a glorious mesmerising earworm. Apparently, the tune is older but it was first adopted by the Grenadiers as a slow march after they defeated Napoleon's Imperial Guard at Waterloo. (Mind bogglingly, their other Slow March was written for them and presented to them by Handel in 1725. He subsequently used the tune in his opera Scipio.)

Why is it called 'Grenadiers Return' when the Welsh Guards are doing it? e

Just the March, they normally play it as the colour is marched through the ranks.

Believe it also just connects back to the Right flank was a company of grenadiers.
@kevinadamson5768
@kevinadamson5768 Жыл бұрын
All guards battalions had a right flank company or grenadier company and this was usually played for the slow march, only the Scots guards have a right flank company now, the Grenadiers are called queen's company the Welsh Prince of Wales company and I think the Irish and Coldstream are called no 1 company.

My fave march song. :) Altho it's about the fall of harlech castle by the Brits it's a epic song. I'm British too. I know what it's all about and so does the monarch but it's probably her fave song too.

The Drum Majors leading The Massed Bands are: Drum Major Steven Staite, Grenadier Guards; Drum Major Robert Bainbridge, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards; Senior Drum Major WO2 Scott Fitzgerald, Coldstream Guards; Drum Major Sie de Wit, 1st Battalion Welsh Guards; Retired Drum Major Tony Taylor, Coldstream Guards.

Fairly certain Staite wasn’t a warrant officer, you can easily tell this by his No 1 dress uniform. He doesn’t have the large crown above the 4 chevrons which indicates a warrant officer.

This wasn't a public rehearsal, i.e. the Major General's Review or the Colonel's Review. This was a private rehearsal organised by the Garrison Sergeant Major. Horse Guards Parade and Horse Guards Rd were closed off for the duration (you can see the police officers in the background enforcing this) although the public can still see some of the action from St. James' Park (behind the Guards Memorial in the video).

I see the trooping. You can see some of the men trying to "catch up". Fitness, I mean how the tunics look, have some issues. Some bearskins look off and fake to me. I don't know why.

Mayhem380 I know. Many times I watch both the BBC and German videos because during the German, you don't hear speaking during the march past (in quick time at least). I still find it nice to see the Trooping from the stands too.

Mayhem380 The more I look at this, the more I want to see until the Coldstreamers past. If the lines are this wobbly in slow time, imagine quick time and their arm swing. I do hope the Garrison Sergeant Major will sort out the lads. Try to get footage of the other rehearsals.

Mayhem380 I hope the drill this year is a lot better than last year. I was watching some British Pathé videos of Trooping The Colour and for the Grenadiers 300th anniversary,they had a quick quick time than normal. I'm wonder if the same is happening for this year because the Welsh Guards is turning 100 years old. Is it? If you have the march pasts in slow and quick time, please post.
@mayhem380
@mayhem380 9 жыл бұрын
***** I believe the reason for the slower pace in modern times is because of the fewer amount of guardsmen. As you know, certain portions of the parade must occur at certain times (e.g. Her Majesty stepping onto the saluting dais exactly when the Horse Guards clocktower strikes 11) and so to ensure that these rigid timings were kept, the cadence was slowed down to accommodate for that fact that there are now usually 6 coys rather than the full 8 of days gone by. I don't have the full march pasts but I have the neutral slow march and the first few phrases of Men of Harlech (i.e. from just after Hazelmere is played and the Guards have right formed to the first two coys saluting the dais) if that is of interest?
