I haven't had this happen to this degree while invading yet, but invasions in the dlc are so buggy, I keep spawning in a tree in one of the late game areas and I somehow invaded a host while they were fighting Relanna and was able to enter the arena with a Phantom Recusant Finger for some reason. I also somehow invaded someone whole they were fighting Messmer but couldn't get in the arena, I kept getting teleported back out and being told I was outside the multiplayer boundary.

Enemies in all the games can hit invaders with certain attacks. Basically the easiest way to tell if an enemy will hit you is if it leaves a big cloud of dust on the ground when it swings, or if it performs a grab or an AOE attack
