Its also a pile of crap - a 60s pop star pretending to be Mahler or John Adams There is a reason it was only played once in the UK !

😂 I wouldn't call it a pile of crap, not exactly. I’d rather say it's a completely indifferent piece of work. To be honest, I never understood why Paul McCartney, who has written some of the nicest songs in music history, tried to venture into classical music. Is it narcissism? Is it ignorance? Or is it simply a matter of "I just want to do it, I can do it, so I will do it"? What really angers me is that this is happening while the doors of the Cincinnati Opera and other great halls are shut to younger classical and contemporary composers. I repeat: I consider Sir Paul a genius. He has written some of the greatest songs of all time. Period.

I love these brief summaries! Thanks for making them!! I've been to Aida, La Traviata and Madame Butterfly so far (my dad is a big opera buff). I always said I liked opera, but more based on references or songs I heard than actually going to see them myself). Especially Madame Butterfly was really amazing / moving. My friends however aren't into opera, so these video's are a great way to summarize what I watched without boring them :)

This is so well done. I wish you’d do them for all the works of the modern cannon, not just the ones that go up in Cincinnati. It’s so helpful to get such a concise, quality summary and context in under ten minutes. Thanks for posting .

ONLY UNHARNESSED HEARTS CAN SURVIVE A LOCKED-DOWN LIFE. LIKE A RIVER RUSHING FROM THE GRIP OF ITS BANKS, AS LIGHT ESCAPES THE COLDEST STAR; A QUALITY LOVE -- THE LOVE OF ALL LOVES - - WILL BREAK AWAY. WHEN SORROW CLOUDS THE MIND, THE SPINE GROWS STRONG; NO PRETTY WORDS CAN SOOTHE OR CURE WHAT HEAVY HANDS CAN BREAK. WHEN SORROW IS DEEP, THE SECRET SOUL KEEPS ITS WEAPON OF CHOICE: THE LOVE OF ALL LOVES. NO PRETTY WORDS CAN EASE OR CURE WHAT HEAVY HANDS CAN DO. WHEN SORROW IS DEEP, THE SECRET SOUL KEEPS ITS QUALITY LOVE. WHEN SORROW IS DEEP, THE SECRET SOUL KEEPS ITS WEAPON OF CHOICE: THE LOVE OF ALL LOVES!

Love triumphs? If ever two characters from Opera did NOT deserve a happy ending it's Turandot and Calif. He stands around watching them torture and murder poor Liù just to save his own ass, and Turandot is the one of the most unpleasant bitches in any opera. That said, the music and arias in "Turandot" take our breath away. They just need to change that ending.
