The joke would have been funnier if it was reversed with the last wife, after 4 or 5 days of her husband’s inactivity, inquiring as to why nothing was done with her husband responding “My mother is away on vacation.”

I heard this one years ago with a different punchline; instead of his mother pressuring him, the grandfather is getting married to a 20-year-old woman. The doctor asks, "why would a 100-year-old man want to get married to a 20-year-old?" And the answer comes: "Doctor, who said he WANTS to get married to her?" (implying she's pregnant).

Not exactly. The Yiddish word he is referring to means too overdone, too busy, too much. You would say the same if a woman was wearing too much makeup or gaudy earrings or flashy clothing. The point of the joke is that Schwartz, who was not the most sophisticated person in the world all of a sudden becomes an art expert. But he still uses the Yiddish word to express his opinion, so apparently he’s not so sophisticated after all.
