Positional warfare against an opponent with more artillery, manpower and a bigger air force is not logical. The number of casualties will increase, no terrain will be gained, and in the long run, the smaller side will bleed its reserve. In 2022-2023, the Ukrainian Army did have an opportunity for maneuver warfare. Especially in the Kherson phase. But they never went for it. Instead, they tried to breach a fortified Russian defensive belt the year after. And, they allowed the Russian army to construct its defensive belt. This is a big tragedy, this war.

As far as Russian losses they were accurately reported on Media Zona and the BBC up until a few months ago when the political establishment got wind of the fact they were reporting the truth. At that time there were about 40k Russian KIA and 500K Ukrainian KIA. Or something like that. Russian PM Vladimir Putin once reported AFU losses were 7x higher than RUAF losses. At the end of the day there are 4 objectives to the Russian SMO that the west does not report. So far Russia is losing on the four SMO objectives. I saw several Ukrainian POWs interviewed. All of them were filthy skinny old men in their 60s. They all said they'd been kidnapped off the streets, given 35 days training, then sent to the front. I could not help but pity these poor guys. This insane war needs to end.

The whole point of Russia's military doctrine which emphasizes slow and methodical encirclements of Ukrainian positions is to conserve manpower. If Russia didn't care about losses they could have thrown hundreds of thousands of men at the frontline and been at Kiev by now - at the expense of tens of thousands of casualties. But they don't do that, which means they are taking far fewer casualties than the Ukrainians are falsely reporting.
