She’s just outstanding. I found her when Ado did a cover of her song ‘Crime and Punishment’, and from there she basically instantly became one of my favourite artists. I still don’t even think I’ve listened to all of her songs, she has so many! But my favourite is ‘A Driving Rain in Darkness’. I love the strings at the start and the marching feeling, and the cool guitar solo (the guitar and bass solos are always so sick. and as a bassist i especially appreciate those lines)

I'm a music journalist and for me she is a GENIUS. One of the greatest artists of all time. It's funny because the way you found out about her work is the same as me, but it took me some years to find the song because i'm stupid and using Shazam never crossed my mind. Anyway, after checking 2016 Olympics' page on Wikipedia, i starting digging deep into her work as of 2019 and i never felt the same. She is the last music discovery that really rocked my art foundations. I'm still really amazed by her work and i can only feel sorry for not speaking Japanese (and also that i don't have many people to talk to about her 😑 )

I adore her, I've been following her work both solo and with Tokyo Jihen since 2000/2001 when I was a preteen living in northern NJ and had a local TV station that showed Korean and Japanese rebroadcasted programming and got introduced to her through music videos and interviews from her first and second albums. Anytime I meet someone who knows her music in the US I get so excited. She's criminally under appreciated in the English speaking world, IMO.

I've always loved her. I discovered her music when I was in high-school and I'm 35 now so very formative years of my life, listening to her music brings on soo many emotions all at once on top of being very nostalgic. I didn't know Japanese but she always spoke to me regardless. I'm glad to see more people in the west being as touched by her in recent years. I hope she'll do a US tour

Nice video. I totally agree that it is far too easy to reduce the discussion of China and Taiwan to boiler-plate geopolitics or economics that drive clicks. As someone for whom China is on the periphery of my main interests, and without the linguistic capacity to delve into the material directly, it is difficult to find diverse viewpoints. I am sure that there is considerable effort being put on both sides of the equation to steer the narrative. As we discussed, the ability to paint the picture, to make the lists, and frame identities is incredibly powerful, and whether overtly or covertly, everyone has an agenda. I was wondering your thoughts on KZbinrs like @serpentza or @laowhy86. Obviously they have their perspectives, and I wonder if it would even be possible to look at the KZbinrs talking about China through a historical perspective to trace the topics, popularity, and revenue of the perspectives and content creators. Of course, tracing the supporters, and motivations of creators over time is even more difficult. Anyway, thanks for the interesting video and I appreciate the insights.

Thanks! And, to your questions, I haven’t heard of the first person you mention, and have only seen one or two of laowhy86’s videos, so I can’t really speak in too much depth about the content they produce. It seems like the latter is interested in generating a lot of contentious debate online. Although discussing controversial matters is meaningful, one must seriously examine one’s own intention when entering into a debate. If the intent is to enrage the “other,” then whatever valuable information is generated from the discussion may ultimately amount to nothing. To your other point, it would be interesting to look more in depth at these KZbinrs’ and other’s content about China and historicize their upload habits, view trends, etc. Looking at these four, discussion about China and Taiwan generally started to pick up around 2019/2020. China and Taiwan certainly became more relevant around this time, which may be an important reason why they began talking about them more, though I can’t really draw further conclusions than that, at least not without more thought and analysis.

Malacca was just one in a long line of such port polities along the Malacca straits throughout the past 1500 years. It should not be analysed as if it were a modern nation state. The previous Malay capital was for hundreds of years in Palembang and Jambi in Sumatra. The move to Malacca followed from Javanese attacks on Palembang and after the Portuguese takeover of Malacca, the Malay capital just shifted south to the Johor-Riau area. It always had the cosmopolitan diversity, which was simply contingent on the flow of international travel and trade through the straits. Singapore today is the modern incarnation of Malacca. It is the rich, diverse, cosmopolitan central port along the Malacca straits. The ancient pattern hasn't changed. So it makes little sense to talk about the "weakness" inherent in diversity in relation to the fall of Malacca. These port polities were necessarily diverse by virtue of their modus vivendi and have been attacking and destroying one another throughout the centuries, right until the complete domination by the British and Dutch in the 19th century.

Thanks for this. I'm up to 9:25. I think it's generally understood that the Communists' position on Israel and the Arabs was not out of internationalist idealism, but Stalin's paranoia about the British, whom they believed the Arabs were puppets of. The differences within the Communist movement were secondary.

"Lotus in a Sea of Fire" by the late Thich Nhat Hanh is an incredible (and short) book by a third force leader written in 1967. It was after talking to Thich Nhat Hanh that Martin Luther King Jr. finally came out against the war.

Who is seeking power based on foreign overseas military bases ? If you combine Chinese and Russian bases which might number 15, how does that compare with over 850 U.S. known oversea bases ? Is this what the exorbitant price of a Georgetown brainwashing degree in Foreign Relations and Public Admin. or even plain history---are you the result of reaching the pinnacle of what a unipolar education looks and sounds like despite what is in the public good and present day realities of the crash of American empire ? We can all agree the U.S. leads the world in creating refugees since Desert Storm. Does Georgetown keep track of those statistics ? With the invasion of Ukraine, we surpass the 35 million mark and just with our U.S. /NATO arming and weapons that have failed so far, the permanent refugees are likely to topple the 40 million mark with the damage we have done to that country. Is this worth the price of a Georgetown Degree ? Making the world safe for Blackrock is the value of a Georgetown Education . Can you live on--or rather with That ? www.bitchute.com/video/MdSTBLC8Fo2H/

I love Tokyo Jihen, but there's no 2-CD compilation you could make from their entire discography that would be better than just choosing, as is, any 2 of Ringo's first 3 albums. As a composer she's on a whole other level to the boys, even if Izawa is consistently very good and the others certainly have their moments.

good evening. I am a Japanese passing by. Thank you for telling me about my favorite singer Shiina Ringo. If you could understand Japanese, I think you would have been able to enjoy more of her inner life through her work. So I would like to give a Japanese explanation that she uses her works in. As for the characteristics of the language, the Japanese she uses is much older than the normal Japanese used by modern Japanese. For the above reasons, there are few Japanese who can understand her songs by listening. So she uses old Japanese. Japanese Estimated 500 Years Ago. Another thing is that she, Ringo Shiina, is said to be a rare conservative singer in Japan. During her performance, the audience carries the Japanese flag into the venue. It is also the navy flag of the former Imperial Japanese Army. Have you ever seen this flag? A flashy Japanese flag. Two points above. In other words, old Japanese and her audience are Japanese conservatives. Both are very rare in Japan. In addition, in Europe and America, requests for Shiina Ringo's debut are frequently sent to her agency, but they are not realized. Her band Tokyo Incidents is positive, but Shiina Ringo is not. The reason, she says, is that she doesn't like being busy. My two favorite singers are Ringo Shiina and Eikichi Yazawa. Please listen to Eikichi Yazawa.too. You can also listen to all of her works on Amazon Music on Amazon Prime. maybe this is only in japan.

@thomsjpnkid
@thomsjpnkid Жыл бұрын
@@DavidSanchez-wq2dj Good morning David. First of all I would like to thank you for your interest in my post. The stripes on the national flag in your question are from the era when naval forces were the main force in wars around the world, and the imperial navy's battleships had poor fuel efficiency. About 150 years ago. The Japanese Navy had to refuel at allied refueling points, so the Imperial Navy's flag had to be flashy. Otherwise they may mistake the Imperial fleet for their enemy. This flashy, striped flag was never used in Japan except in war.

i remember reading some youtube comments about how a lot of koreans dislike sheena ringo performance, but like her music. apparently it's because the rising sun flag, even though it's just modified rising sun flag, with tokyo jihen symbol at its center
@thomsjpnkid
@thomsjpnkid Жыл бұрын
I see. The Rising Sun that Ringo Shiina loves is the military flag of the former Japanese Imperial Army. However, the current Korean peninsula. At that time, there was no historical background for North Korea to hate the Raising Sun. Well, in 1944, the Rising Sun was a symbol of communism, but China was a communist state, and both North and South Korea had been vassals of China for 1,000 years. In other words, when Chinese or Koreans see the Rising Sun, they react negatively, but they may have forgotten that Japan, China, and Korea have been communist countries for a longer period of time. . Changing the topic, in Japan we live in the times. The name of the current era is Reiwa. Before that was the Heisei era. Before that was the Showa era. The sounds created by Ringo Shiina are consciously reminiscent of the Showa era. In terms of the Western calendar, that's the sound from 1926 to 1989.

Hello! As a Chinese Historian can you recommend me a comprehensive list of Chinese history from the earliest times to modern day? This is a great question. I would recommend a number of books if you want to familiarize yourself with a basic history of China from early times to now. In chronological order, they are: 1. Early China: A Social and Cultural History, by Li Feng 2. The Early Chinese Empires: Qin and Han, by Mark Edward Lewis. 3. China between Empires: The Northern and Southern Dynasties, by Mark Edward Lewis. 4. China’s Cosmopolitan Empire: The Tang Dynasty, by Mark Edward Lewis. 5. The Age of Confucian Rule: The Song Transformation of China, by Dieter Kuhn. 6. The Troubled Empire: China in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, by Timothy Brook. 7. Making China Modern: From the Great Qing to Xi Jinping, by Klaus Muhlhahn. I also posted a video a few months ago talking about 5 Chinese history books that have influenced me. I hope this helps!

Dr. Dudden's response to the question which references JP (I decline to make his name searchable) was as tactful an answer as I have ever heard, it was truly disappointing that her insight into the nature of Japanese imperial expansion was forced to come in contact (even if only tangentially) with JP. When I pass this mortal coil statically sometime in the next 50 years I will meet my final rest with the sure knowledge that JP will be consigned to histories waste pile of of insignificant and unmemorable pseudointellectuals.
