Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed the playing! I agree-the distortion from the Catalinbread Katzenkönig, partly based on the ProCo Rat, does sound different from what Kurt Cobain likely used in the studio for In Utero, which was probably the SansAmp Tech 21

@ The speakers definitely play a huge role, I agree. In this take, I used the stock Celestion V-Type speakers in my Marshall SV212 cab, but I recently swapped one for a classic Celestion Vintage 30-it might get even closer to nailing the tone. What would be your favorite choice?

@@thetonespotting well thankfully we know the exact rig kurt had at pachyderm for in utero so I'd use a Univox Hi-Flier phase 2 custom and a revision 2 Veleno aluminum guitar running into a Boss DS-1 pedal into a Tech 21 Sansamp running into a vintage 70s quad reverb with orange label utah speakers. very expensive and rare rig though haha

⁠@@gavinrolls1054 True that! Very expensive and also peculiar gear set. Let me also correct myself: in this specific cover, unlike all the others I’ve published on Nirvana, I didn’t connect the Marshall cab but directly miked the current speaker of my Fender ‘65 Deluxe Reverb. That’s why the sound is brighter than expected for this song. The Jensen Blackbird is a powerful alnico speaker-a typical pairing for a Fender amp. I never had the Utah, which may share the same flavor of American vintage tone, but it looks quite different in terms of tone profile from the Jensen, which has chimey highs and isn’t as balanced in the mids compared to the Utah Orange Label. For all the rest of the gear you mentioned, that is the secret sauce for sure. 😉 Thank you for sharing!
