Great video Keith, thanks for your work! But Could you please make the raw footage available so I can re-watch some of the races? Cheers!

Surely this is a course record rather than a world record. Unless im missing something and there is an identical course somewhere else in the world?
@keithmoule7 ай бұрын
I think it’s because of the iconic course. But like swimming the channel, I guess that could be considered a course record, but it’s always been considered a world record.

There is two rekords for K2. One with portaging (20:29min) and one with you knead to go atlist half of the locks (22/44) - 24h 12min

Nothing saying what the record is other than 'Fastest Time for the River Thames' which is vague.

Great work. Gauntlet now definitely on the floor. Who's up next?
@keithmoule7 ай бұрын
Hey, sorry if this has come across as vague. This was just a highlights video from the day, on a quick turn around. There will be a follow up video which will hopefully explain the record better, and let everyone know what this record / challenge is all about. Cheers

For it to be recognised by Guinness the rules state you must not portage more than half the locks. So half must be operated and normally.
@BrettSirrell7 ай бұрын
What are the rules? Dont they have to actually sit in some locks or some strange rule like that?

how does it end in Westminster bridge? are the boats allowed to race there while the tourist boats are on the thames? Didn't know about this race. seems very fun
@keithmoule7 ай бұрын
Yes, you make your way all the way into the city passed the tourist boats, but there are fewer of them out early Sunday morning. And finish under the right hand arch of Westminster Bridge! Unfortunately this year the course finished at Teddington, due to the highest water flow seen in years. The port of London, closed the Thames causing the race to make an adjustment. Last year, and next year, the finish line will be under the iconic bridge at Westminster!

I asked you for advice before my first race in 2017 and your advice was 'portaging is the key to a decent time'....And you were right😊 Great video. I'd love you to describe the parts of the course for those that don't know it, plus how mere mortals ought to tackle different parts of it....
@barneyrooney71267 ай бұрын
I and a pal did it in 1969 in an old wooden canoe. Missed the tide at Teddington lock and finished the race under Westminster bridge after tipping over the boat in rough water, then losing it (later found down river) whereupon climbing up the stones walls, after a swim, to complete . What a time in life! 😅

Absolutely awesome paddlers in those conditions. When your busy supporting a crew you only get to see a handful of other K2 crews. It's brilliant to look back at what a day, what a night and morning. Well done Keith on your fast turn around, only to be expected...great work all the same. 😊

Great series of posts. Thanks Keith. What do you think about using a HRM to optimise your Effort vs Pace. I have found that I can paddle at a Maximum Heart Rate minus 15% for my usual 20km training sessions, but I'm still learning
@keithmoule8 ай бұрын
Hey, please you are enjoying the posts! I always use a HRM in training but never in the race for ultra marathons. 3 reasons, 1) it's something else that can rub on your skin, so it's a potential hazard. 2) you can get too obsessed with it and try to scale a 2 hour training session to a 20 hour race, it's just unrealistic 3) in ultra marathons you can get heart rate creep, where you HR starts to elevate over time because of the overall stress and fatigue on your body, you can probably still cope ok, but can be a worry if you are used to tracking it over 2 hours or so. By the time to get to the race you'll have a good idea of what feel tough / good, so I would recommend going on feeling for the race and try to not get caught up in the numbers.

Keep em coming! Thanks for being one of the very few authoritative social media contributors on paddling in the UK. Have you thought of writing a book? Paddling technique, boat set up and choice, training, tactics etc. I'd certainly buy it!

Lights are supposed to be non dazzeling. Did you do anything to «undazzel» the front lights?
@keithmoule8 ай бұрын
The lights were set to illuminate the immediate bank on the canal with a wide beam, this wasn't a light that would be dazzeling unless you were close by and on a collision course. The narrow beam light was longer and less bright.

Definitely a white light at the front and back. Shielding the button lights is a must. I now understand why you looked like a Coca Cola Christmas lorry as you paddled past on the way to your 2023 record. I will definitely be looking out for the wide-velcro.

Hi Keith, thanks for the video, really interesting. Do you remember who made the lightweight/slim slip on shoes please? I'm size 12 so fitting anything in a K1 gets snug quickly!
@keithmoule8 ай бұрын
The name of the brand is 'Skinners'. They have great grip and take up very little additional room in the boat.
