Thank you for a chance to see this beautiful opera with a well-known overture. Patter ensembles, chorus and a minute patter-song (almost impossible: presto instead of the usual allegro). We also had some lyrical moments with a nice clarinet solo and a good tenor aria (serenade? to rival the one from "Cavalleria"?) both in the last act. One of my colleagues from Fringe/amateur opera Cyrl Foley (bass-baritone), though, like me, with some professional training/experience, loved the "other" Mascagni and Leoncavallo works. I must look for the former's symphony, apparently an influence for "le Maschere". Is it possible to improve the picture which seems murky till the curtain-calls? They could have had spot-lights for the solos. Nowadays on t.v./film sometimes you can't see the performers for the murk! Night-time means comparatively dark but the cast must be seen! I studied Commedia dell Arte and acted the Doctor (lots of real and bogus Latin gobbledegook). I also played Arlequin in Marivaux which is only inspired by Arlecchino. I liked the small stage similar to when I played in Venice (part of a course). Like the famous "the Servant of Two Masters" (not the recent British re-write!) by the Piccolo Teatro di Milano (& one production of "the Comedy of Errors"). It was raised so actors could hide underneath & possibly had drawn, canvas, backdrops above. It was transported to different squares.

E per fortuna Del Monaco non aveva la mezza voce per sentito dire la si può ascoltare nella parola disciogliean dai veli fa una cosa meravigliosa un Tenore come Mario del Monaco non esisterà mai piu .Un Dio della lirica italiana!!!!!

È una bellissima mezza voce tutta poggiata sul fiato e timbrata. La mezza voce, poi, va considerata in relazione al tipo di voce. È chiaro che la mezza voce di un Del Monaco non può essere come quella di un Tagliavini. Grande Del Monaco...e grande pure Tagliavini😊
